I actually like me some slow and redundant storage which can be used for temporary files. More space on the high end storage for more used files like games. But I agree the size/value of the HDD is out of sync with the rest of the build

We don't know the owner's circumstances. Maybe just an HDD laying around, or their laptop was broken, or bought it for dirt cheap, or something else. Regardless, It's their choice and everyone should respect that.

Okay? So? The owner probably just needed some extra storage for not so frequently opened files and had this laying around so they slapped it in. These drives are slow in comparison to modern SSDs but are also completely fine to use for pictures, school files or whatever. It's really just gaming and video editing where you really notice the slower speeds but for that, there's still a really damn fast SSD in there.

ill never give up on HDDs. they're simply just cooler. i did cave and get a 256GB NVME for my windows install, but most of my stuff is on two HDDs, 1TB and 2TB

Advantage of HDD there's no risk of data loss if you don't implement it with electricity for a decades. SSD could lose some data if not turned on for 3 years (some 10 SCL years)

Some old and reliable storage for work, you don't need fast storage for just simple files etc.

I have a Samsung 990 PRO 1TB and a 3.5'', WD BLUE 1TB.
