These things grow on cactus pads. My grandma says they would smush them on their fingers and used them as lipstick and rouge.

Carmine is made from the wings of a little S. American beetle, is non toxic and very expensive.... in a company I used to work we used it to enhance the color of cherry and strawbery marmelades.
