I remember when I used to play that I was somewhat afraid of heading to the ladder and losing elo and stuff, so I only played 2v2's, this ended up allowing me to level up most of my cards, and when I eventually created courage to head out I easily dominated in the Lower arenas, until I got around one that was within my level of cards. (I think 4 or 5)
