I'm drooling at the thought of Brent building a warmed over Cleveland. That's exactly what I want for my wife's '67 Mustang. Jon Kaase said he was once asked what had to be done to get a Cleveland to 400hp. He said "Just start pulling plug wires. You'll get there!" 🤣

Hey Brent, I’m late to arrive at this party but I’m just trying to get caught up on all of your videos made before I became a subscriber. Since the ‘70 Mach 1 that I’ve owned for 42 years was originally a “M” code, 351C, I was going to comment about the factory horsepower rating. Now I see many others beat me to it. I did notice the foundry casting date code on the block. January 29, 1970. I know you’ll sleep better knowing that useless bit of information. 😂🏁

just a cam swap should give 400 hp a buddy had one with just that and still with the factory carb and intake turned on like a bat out of hell that motor should be 300 hp

In Australia we grew up with Cleveland's
These engines were fitted in XW, XY & XA Falcon GTs in hydraulic form.
GT HO versions had stud mounted rockers for solid cams
The Bathurst 500 mile race was won by these vehicles in 70 and 71.
The race went to 1000 kms in 73 were a Cleveland powered car won along with 1974, 1977 finally in 1981.
Cleveland production ended in 1982.
In 1971 under production car rules these engines with factory fitted 780 vac secondary and factory solid cam dyno'd at about 380hp with that cast iron inlet

400hp is just an intake, headers and mild hydraulic cam. I’ve built a few and horsepower is easy to make with these engines. I mostly built 428cj engines but the Cleveland was easier to gain power with and loved RPMs with the 4V heads just do a little oil system work if you turn them above 7000 or your 3/7 rod bearings will be starved for oil.

So nice to get an engine that has not been molested.

Nice to see a Cleveland build Brent. You know I love them. If it is closed chamber heads (which it should be) compression is 11.4 and 300 HP

Thank you very much for doing a Cleveland build! Especially at 1970 D block! That’s the build I need to do!

Lykins Motorsports Hi Brent. Back in 1998 when I pulled the oil pan from my 70 2v block, my pick up screen was completely covered with those umbrella seals. They get hard, brake and find their way down there. My cylinder head rear oil return holes were clogged with them too. Never noticed any issues with it except it would puff blue smoke on start up and here&there driving it. Be curious to see how the pick up looks like on this one.

Back in the mid ‘80s I ran across a guy with a Torino with a Cleveland he said had 2 barrel heads, headers & descently low gears. Car ran low 13’s which was stout back in those days.
Looking forward to watching the build!

Certainly interested. I've got a '73 Mach 1 351C 2V I'd like to upgrade to around 400HP. Seems 4V closed chamber heads are really hard to find these days. Anyway looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

Very excited to see this! I have the exact same engine out of a '71 Mach1 that needs a rebuild.

I've been hoping for this. Even with a mild build, it will be nice to see you go through it.

Way better than a Windsor. Why did Ford stop making them?

factory 300 hp. 400 should be easy. Certainly can breath with those heads!
