The Weekly Comet hosts Tamara Conniff and Jonathan McHugh present an exclusive performance with singer/songwriter Rodriguez, who is the subject of the Oscar winning "Searching for Sugar Man."

Sixto Rodriguez' story is truly inspirational. A native of Detroit, in the 1970s he recorded two albums which went largely unnoticed in the U.S. He hung up his guitar and went to work in construction for 30 years. However, unbeknownst to Rodriguez his albums gained popularity internationally, going platinum in South Africa and becoming the anthem of resistance in the Apartheid-era. Director Malik Bendjelloul's "Searching for Sugar Man" chronicles the journey of two fans on a mission to find out what had happened to Rodriguez, who was rumored to have committed suicide. Rodriguez performs his world famous hit "Sugar man"

Lyrics:

Sugar man, won't you hurry
'Cause I'm tired of these scenes
For a blue coin won't you bring back
All those colors to my dreams
Silver magic ships you carry
Jumpers, coke, sweet Mary Jane

Sugar man met a false friend
On a lonely dusty road
Lost my heart when I found it
It had turned to dead black coal.
Silver magic ships you carry
Jumpers, coke, sweet Mary Jane

Sugar man you're the answer
That makes my questions disappear
Sugar man 'cause I'm weary
Of those double games l hear

R.I.P Malik Bendjelloul (sitting next to Rodriguez), you not only brought us a beautiful film about a man who didn't take his life as legend thought, but you brought him back to life and made him the legend he is. It was you in the end who departed the world by your own hands. It's such a tragedy, you were very gifted and you were very worthy of your Oscar. May you rest in peace ♥ x

I remember my dad raising me on this music. He used to always use the songs to teach me about the state of the government, and the concept of disestablishmentarianism. He always told me how Rodriguez was basically a philosopher, because his lyrics reflected such painful truths.

It was some deep shit, for an 8 year old to listen to, but it burned into my mind. Thanks so much, dad. And thanks so much Rodriguez. You two shaped my perspective on the world.

As a South African who adored him in the 70's, glad he finally was recognised.

I watched the film on Rodriguez last night and it is like a fairytale, his story, with a happy ending. He has two lives, and some people know about his one life, and other people know about his second life as a musician, and the two lives are completely sealed from each other. Not so much now. But this film moved me so much. What a gift to music Rodriguez is.
