'Brent Ford And The Nylons' were local heroes in Birmingham, U.K. at such places as the Barrel Organ pub in the city's 'Irish Quarter' in Digbeth.
Their name was a pun on 'Brentford Nylons', a company that sold cheap bed linens made of synthetic materials that had a string of ubiquitous British TV adverts presented by DJ Alan 'Fluff' Freeman throughout the 1970's.
'Sex Pistols' first gig was reputedly supporting them at St. Martins College of Art (London) and it was apparently their manager, Henry, who famously pulled the plug on them.
Four of the band members recorded as backing band for 'John Dowie' in 1977. However, the original bass player Gavin Lawson was replaced by Vo Fletcher for the Brent Ford single. Lawson went on join 'Denizens' and later to crew for 'Special Beat'. Pete Batley was also seen with Dowie on the seminal rock show 'So It Goes' in November 1977.
'Brent Ford And The Nylons' then appeared on the short-lived but fondly remembered British music show 'Revolver' that only ran for 8 weeks in 1978 (hosted by Peter Cook).
They only ever recorded this one single which was self released on their own label. All three songs are covers; '19th Nervous Breakdown' by 'The Rolling Stones', 'Big Rock Candy Mountain' by 'Harry McClintock' (via 'Willie Nelson') and 'C'mon Everybody' by Eddie Cochran.
Most copies had a plain sleeve although a fold-out picture sleeve was available with copies sold in Birmingham record shops and at some live shows. There were apparently only a 100 of these so it's become quite the punk rarity for collectors.
The band on these recordings were:
Brent Ford (vocals) (a.k.a. John Mostyn, now a prominent music industry figure in the West Midlands, most notably associated with 'The Specials', 'The Beat', 'Fine Young Cannibals', etc.)
Dick Nylon (guitar voc) (a.k.a. Dick Nelson.)
Vo Nylon (bass, nervous guitar) (a.k.a. Vo Flecher, now a well respected composer, television presenter and jazz/ folk musician.)
Jim Nylon (drums) (a.k.a. Jim Bates, went on to join 'Wide Boys'. He's still around and playing in the Birmingham area with such bands as 'Zoot Stax' and 'The Dave Tickle Band'.)
Pete Nylon (piano) (a.k.a. Pete Batley.)
If anyone knows more, or has more accurate information, I'd love to hear it. I'm sure I could get a winning Pub Quiz question out of it.
