I really appreciate that you've committed to the "shorts" and I really think you've done a great job with them

I liked how you used a scrap shelf as the base in this one. I did that as an easy and flat way to make it a true scrap project.

Also a great way to get very specific angles and friction fit things like miters.

I use a 45° shooting board often to install glass stops on windows or panel-moulding on doors.

Those need to be cut super tight, and each vertical piece may need to be slightly different. Taking off 1000ths of an inch with each swipe of a plane to get the perfect friction fit is way faster and easier than taking it to the saw to shave it.

One trick you can employ to enhance the cut is to wet the end of the board with alcohol (or shellac solvent - still alcohol, but air boards . . .). Water works too, but it wicks more and drys comparatively slowly. It is a method I learned from making end-grain microscope slides to identify wood.

FYI: your sole will likely not be square to the side of your plane. So to get a square edge you will probably end up with your blade kinda far out and off to one side in a way that would be crazy in normal operation.

Another great idea is the jig Paul Sellers posted that goes in the vise - I've both and I use rhem both 😊

I haven’t made anything out of wood since jr high but I love your videos. It’s great stuff and son here I plan on building most of the projects I’ve seen here.

I have done this on picture frame miters, but it's a little tricky for me. I had a stroke 14 years ago, robbing me of a lot of the use of my right hand. So I hold the the plane in my left hand, and grip the work piece in my right because the grasp in the right isn't quite as bad and you don't have to move it. Obviously, my shooting board is backwards from yours. Any other ideas how to get around this problem?

Do you hold the wood flush with the edge of the shooting board or just beyond the edge? Thanks.

chuting board is ESSENTIAL! My skill level depends on it now.

No, you just have to worry about the tear out on the back side 😭

Why would you plan the end piece of wood?
