My advice for young people who consider getting into tech would be: Go for it ONLY if you feel a deep passion about it and you think you have talent. Do not go for extra money, it is not there any more. The golden age of (software) engineering is over and will never come back. The market is oversaturated with many more applicants than jobs.

My answer: no, don't get into tech right now. The less of us, the better for me.

5:55 I work at a large financial company. We have millions of lines of COBOL code that we need to modernize to Python and Java. One of our data science teams produced an LLM-based product that will help to automate all parts of the process, from code analysis and explanation to generation and testing. Yes it will still require humans in the loop and things will go wrong. But they estimate it will reduce the timeline by 50-75%. That’s a lot of additional people that don’t need to be hired.

In my anecdotal experience (and what I’m hearing from others) people are not being replaced by AI per se, but the demand for additional talent is sharply reduced because you can just get so much more done so quickly.

There was definetely an IT job market bubble during the pandemic, as everyone needed to work/buy stuff from home. The job market took a hit, both in open positions and median pay. Also it's true that most companies are after mid/senior level developers. Anyone working on AI has remained pretty much untouched, as that bubble hasn't burst yet.

In my non-AI startup we are hiring juniors and interns. There's just no funding for anything else besides AI and energy lately.

In the bottom line, if someone wants to go into computer science for the money; that ship has sailed. If they are passionate about code; sure go for it.

Let me say, the current market is pretty much ONLY for seniors / experts. Mid Level Engineers are also struggling because companies would have to pay them more than a junior, but at that point, they might as well hire a senior. So, if you are seeing entry - mid level positions with ridiculous requirements, it is because they are not actually entry - mid level positions, they just label them as such to either a) scare away juniors or b) justify a lower salary if they can't find a senior.

If they do not hire me as a junior and prefer AI, well, I can use AI too. As long I can do the entire app - database, back end, front end, I'll make my own company. I learned too much to give up now.

Jobs are posted and then same position reposted within weeks. This is happening since last year. Conclusion, yes Jobs are posted but NO hiring is done.

Currently we give a 15% discount to hire foreign student over a local. Why don't we extend the 15% discount to all students and unemployed. As part of an apprenticeship program, that could last for 3 years. This would give companies and incentive to hire and train tech workers. Every tech job requires some training and companies are loathe to hire a local who, after being trained, will skip off to some other job. Foreign workers, on a visa, are stuck in the job. If Americans had to serve a 3 year apprenticeship, which if they left early, they pay back the tax break. Then companies would have more incentive to hire local U.S. junior engineers.

I was promised a job when I went to college. I won several awards and worked in the field in college. Now to get a job, the pay is in the fast food space and even those are competitive. Very depressing and a waste of time and money.

Be sure to exclude Apple and Amazon. Amazon has a lot of wearhouse jobs. Apple a lot of retail jobs. The others are paltry.

Am I seriously the only one hopeful that AI will greatly boost our work by 99% to the point of a lay-off?

AI isn't going to reduce jobs by replacing devs but by enabling single dev to do job of 3.

I am glad you brought up the whole AI not taking away SWE jobs. I have been telling people that for years. If you sit down and think about it, it would be very hard for AI to take over those jobs, as what people would then train, design, troubleshoot, improve the AI? Oh right, SWE's lol

It’s possible to hire only Srs and only Jrs who are super capable and motivated to replace them.. it just filters out the upcoming talent

I think you're exponentially overestimating that small rise since the all time low...

Applied for like 200 jobs in September, got 2 email replies.

Been hunting since June with the same frequency..

If you're a junior, please give up so I can get a job

I got to disagree with you. The problem is the jobs are leaving the USA. It would be best to pivot to a similar job.

I have been looking for a job for almost a year, but haven't found one yet. I have a master's degree and 1 year of internship experience. Please consider taking or learning computer science. Please

I would say don't get into tech if you think you gonna get a bootcamp certificate and boom you are a developer things don't work this way 99% people fail and get into tech only if you are passionate about and gonna go through a bachelor degree in comp sci as you get the chance to get internships during 4 years
