From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life. -

Damn, when I watched this in theaters I remember it sent chills down my spine because I have similar memories of my mom and pops.

This is so heartbreaking to me. I saw that eyes in my father's and my mother's. He even said exactly same words. 'You turn away my own children against me.'

Weird how I've never seen this depicted in a film or TV show before.

Because it was certainly true in my house.

My parents never touched us but the number 1 worst thing you could POSSIBLY do.... is to tell them to shut up.

Because this is what would happen.

This is so different than the scene I saw in the film. Brad was a lot more hyperactive, talking non stop then the kid says shutup and all hell breaks loose. Much louder and frenetic

I just can´t stop laughing at one idea: Imagine this was not in script. Like they were intended to play normal family breakfast with somewhat ill-tempered dad. Then the child actor said "be quiet" and Brad Pitt broke his character and attacked the kid. Then movie staff tried to intervene but director stopped them with words: "No, hold on and shot, this is pure gold."

Brad was recreating his own childhood at home in the Ozarks and Oklahoma. This was therapy more so than ‘work’.

He doesn't make movies, for example- if you see a dream and if you try to shoot exactly the way you saw it, that will look like a terrance Mallick's movie, but its not storytelling its dream vlogging.
