US will not 'get' Greenland, prime minister says

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen is pushing back on President Donald Trump's assertions that the the U.S. will take control of the island territory. In a Facebook post Sunday, Nielsen said “President Trump says that the United States ‘will get Greenland.’ Let me be clear: The United States will not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future.” Greenland is large, self-governing territory of Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States. Trump has vowed to annex the territory, claiming it’s needed for national security purposes.

You threaten a country and then wonder why they tell you that you are not welcome.

It is quite astonishing that a country with a history like the United States finds itself in this situation, but here are the cold facts: Greenland held general elections on March 11 this year. The overwhelming theme of the election campaign was Greenlandic independence, but mineral extraction, climate change, and of course national security were also significant issues. The two big winners of the election were the parties Naleraq and Demokraatit, which together secured 18 out of 31 seats.

Neither the new government leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, nor the other parties have any desire to make Greenland a part of the United States. Greenland has emphasized this countless times. Nevertheless, the U.S. government continues its unreasonable and provocative policy toward Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark, of which Greenland is a part. Denmark is simply supporting its former colony, as the vast majority of Danish politicians and the population wish for a future shaped by the will of the Greenlandic people. If the Greenlanders had wanted to become Americans, the Danish government and people would, of course, have supported this wish—but that is not the case!

Now, we are facing a possible American invasion of Greenland, which will likely be relatively bloodless (hopefully, a few will choose to resist the invading army for symbolic reasons), but it will nevertheless have enormous consequences for the international order and, not least, for the NATO alliance, which is unlikely to survive one member country attacking another. In fact, never before in history has a democratic country attacked another. The fact that this concerns one of the United States' most loyal allies—one that fought side by side with the U.S. in Iraq and Afghanistan just a few years ago—makes it even more incomprehensible. The very premise of the invasion is just as baffling. Trump claims that his annexation plan is about national and international security, even though Denmark and Greenland have allowed the U.S. military to operate freely in Greenland since 1941—something that was of great importance to the West during the Cold War.

Now, all Americans are faced with a choice. Will you allow Trump to steal Greenland, thereby breaking all democratic rules and shattering NATO? Will you permit an extremely friendly and non-threatening population, which has always been welcoming to the U.S., to be robbed of their homeland? If not, then resist on our behalf. We do not have the means to stop Trump, who is currently launching a massive propaganda campaign to convince Americans that annexing Greenland is of utmost necessity for U.S. national security—even though this is a lie. Americans must act, for we do not have the means ourselves.

The arrogance of some Americans is off the charts. There are enough problems in the USA. Work on those.

Just because they want independence from Denmark does not mean they want to be part of America. Their business is agreed upon and is between them. How about we stop antagonizing our allies???

Why are they antagonizing Greenland?
Leave them alone.

Why in the world do we all of a sudden have to have Greenland? It doesn’t make sense, if it is for security, why all of a sudden is it that critical, after all these years of being a ally of Green land are they suddenly a crucial part of our security? Why?

Dane here. Firstly, since 1951 the US has had the option to establish virtually as many military bases in Greenland as the US deem necessary. No rent, American jurisdiction on the bases. The US has had many facilities in Greenland over the decades since but almost all have been closed. In return the US has obliged itself to provide military security. And Denmark and Greenland has kept Greenland running and developing. This has worked beautifully for decades.
Secondly, US companies already have the full possibility to bid for mining rights in any lot the Greenlandic government offers.
So. The only remaining thing Trump, Vance and MAGA want is territorial sovereignty. Or, to put it bluntly, make the US look greater on a map. All to cater for your President’s vanity.
Dear historical friends in America: is this what you want? A hostile takeover of a long time staunch ally? Is this how you want to be remembered?

Greenlanders should never allow Trump to poison their Inuit culture with bigotry, greed and misery. The indigenous Inuits are a proud and dignified people. Never submit to the bully, make your Inuit ancestors and future Inuit generations proud. 🫡
Chart your own course, be the masters of your own destiny.

I don't think U.S. citizens would condone such a move. I sure as hell wouldn't, and I am on the right side of the aisle.
