IF YOURE HAVING THE ISSUE WITH THE BACKGROUND STILL BEING BLACK- dont toggle the Blend Mode in the effects controlls. Go to the layer in Comp 1 itself in the bottom left quarter of the screen (there should be a Mode option that says "Normal" for most layers and if you dont see it, go to VERY the bottom of the window and scan for a "Toggle Switches/ Mode" option, click it. Then you will se the option to adjust the Mode indevidually for each layer. Click the layer mode you want to adjust (Film Dust & Scratches layer) and set that to screen.

Fractal noise doesn't work in my AE :/ it just makes the black solid white, no matter how I manipulate the effect

Thanks, i previously commented saying would prefer a footage, but now i realize, this is better because we can randomize it and let it go forever without looping which would be unprofessional.
Im looking for vertical scratches, the lines. There is one method of adding Noise and Fast Blur to Vertical and messing with Levels, but that's making the noise look like Rain and not whole lines, so would appreciate how to do that. Thanks again

Hi, I am not able to use this effect as an overlay on a video. Kindly help. Every time I create film dust it is on a black background and when I click on screen or other blending mode background is still appearing.

I did this using your guide and it worked but I have an issue... I set the Mode to "overlay" to make the footage underneath visible. Worked like a charm but the effect stops a minute in to the footage. The dust flakes are still visible but they stop moving around. What could be the issue?
