Ever wondered what that switch on your Shimano rear derailleur does? It's your clutch and this video will show you how to tighten it.

The clutch doesn’t add tension.

It adds resistance to the cage, stopping it bouncing. There is no extra tension on the chain

If this were a french company you would start with one revolution and then do a dozen more.

That’s a REALLY dirty cassette. Dude. Your bike is your friend. A clean friend is a happy friend.

Thank you. I’ve been wondering what the heck that little piece of plastic was for weeks after I got my Commencal MTB. Glad this video popped up!

If you have a Shimano 12sp derailleur... CHECK THE CLUTCH HAS GREASE!!! My 2020 bought XT 12sp apparently had none and seized after only 200 miles and only 2 hand washes (no pressure wash). Entire clutch was rusted and seized, the aluminum bolt that holds the clutch axle came off striped, so will be about 20 days down when my new cage maybe arrives this week (with bolt) from Taiwan.. all Shimano 12sp derailleurs are backordered everywhere..

You only get that adjustment screw on the xt and xtr derailleurs and even then don’t change the factory setting, it’s only for when the clutch wears a bit so you can retighten it.

Oh wow! I've riding Shimano derailleurs for years and never knew there was a clutch adjustment bolt. Thanks!

I think some models you actually have to take the clutch cover off to adjust the tension. Just remove the 3 small screws and the cover and you will find the same adjustment screw as with the higher models

The adjustment screw is really sensitive. Full turns are too coarse of an adjustment; instead, use 1/8 or 1/4 turns.

Nice, I will check this, hehe.
I know there's a clutch there, which I may have switched off when I took the wheel off, the other day.
