The United States military and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) officially began the Super Garuda Shield 2024 exercise on August 26, 2024, marked by an opening ceremony at an Indonesian military base at Juanda Naval Air Base in Surabaya. This joint military exercise also demonstrates the enduring partnership between the two nations.
The U.S. Embassy explained in a statement that Super Garuda Shield is the largest annual military exercise between the United States and Indonesia.
It was initially conducted as an information exchange and training between the U.S. and Indonesia in 2006 under the name Garuda Shield. Since 2022, the exercise has expanded to include partner nations.
This year, military personnel from the United States, Indonesia, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand are participating. Twelve additional countries are attending as observers.
"Every aspect of this year's Super Garuda Shield should challenge us to work collectively and achieve the goals of this training," said Maj. Gen. Joseph R. Harris II, Chief of Staff and Commander of the Hawaii Air National Guard. "I encourage all participants to take full advantage of the extraordinary opportunities available for professional and cultural exchange."
Deputy Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces' Training and Education Command, Air Vice-Marshal Widyargo Ikoputra, stated, "Super Garuda Shield 2024 is a means to create and build mutual trust in the military sector, strengthen bilateral military relations, and enhance multilateral relationships."
According to the latest data from the U.S. Embassy's Defense Cooperation Office in Jakarta, Super Garuda Shield 2024 involves around 5,500 combined troops from all participating countries, with approximately 2,500 U.S. military personnel.
This joint military exercise aims to strengthen the U.S.-Indonesia defense partnership in line with the Defense Cooperation Arrangement, supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific region. This includes enhancing the participating governments' ability to exchange data securely and automatically, regardless of geographic, political, or organizational boundaries.
Partner nation soldiers will engage in various training opportunities, including airborne operations, amphibious operations, and operational information exchanges.
The 2024 iteration will also include a Cyber Exercise to better prepare soldiers for cyber threats. The exercise begins with academic exchanges from experts and professional development workshops, followed by command and control exercises, joint field exercises, and concludes with live-fire drills. Routine training and engagement with allies and partners play a critical role in fostering civil-military cooperation, enhancing emergency preparedness, and improving bilateral response capabilities.
Since 2006, Indonesia has partnered with the Hawaii National Guard as part of the State Partnership Program, a U.S.-led initiative that now encompasses 96 partnerships worldwide.
