His mother, Bertrada, also known as Bertrada Broadfoot, was just as fascinating, even though we don't know much about her. Oh, and she was also the ancestress of most of Europe's royal houses, in case we forget.

Very interesting! Charlemagne is such a starting point that I've never even thought about his father & predecessor, let alone his mother, but it's nice that we know something about her. Kings being mere figureheads sounds odd for that period of history, but I know very little about it & maybe it wasn't weird at all.
