Why is Mustard Oil Banned in US & Europe?

Sometimes, blind faith in poorly done science with questionable economic interests might not be a good idea. The ban on Mustard oil is a great example. On the basis of some animal studies in the 1970s, US & EU have banned mustard oil for sale as a cooking oil because it contains high amounts of erucic acid, and instead what you can buy is the closely related genetically modified cousin - Canola, which is made from rapeseed, a close cousin of the mustard.

What a scam. I had never heard of mustard oil (sarson ka tel) until I went to my wife’s farm in Rajasthan and her family was producing it. It’s really delicious in sarson ka saag and gulgule 😋 Foreign countries should really reconsider their ban.

People living on junk food/fast food are more bothered about consuming Mustard Oil. What an irony.

I'm an ignorant American who doesn't know anything about Mustard Oil. But today I wanted to make a Chicken Curry and the Indian woman who made it best, says she prefers Mustard Oil over any other oil. But, then I noticed a LOT of comments about it being bad for you. So of course, I don't listen to today's propaganda, because most things deal with MONEY and not SCIENCE.. :)

Thank you for posting this. I'm from Corn Country, so Mazola and Canola oils are something I am very familiar with. But I am a HUGE Chicken Curry fan, and if Mustard Oil makes it taste better, then I dang sure want to use it in my recipe. :)

My grandfather lived for 100+ years and he ate mustard oil all his life and so did many of my relatives who lived 80+ and 90+ years.

They banned Ghee and launched 'Clarified butter' for health benefits. WTF is wrong with USA 😂😂

We get cold pressed rapeseed oil in UK. Love mustard oil though. They should put "only for external use" on McDonald's.

We Bengalis cook 80% of our food using Mustard oil. 🤭 even consumed as raw oil (straight from the bottle) in small quantities for some dishes.

Decades ago, in this country, olive oil carried that label - external use only & could only be bought at the pharmacy.

Perfect timing for your video dear sir. Thank you for sharing.
I’ve recently been watching a lot of indian cooking vids on here and the cooks have detailed they use mustard oil. A couple of weeks ago I trotted to an indian grocery store (in London, 🇬🇧) to buy some mustard oil and all the brands stated for external use only that I became confused and walked out of the store without the oil. I’ve continued cooking with ghee but now that I’ve seen your helpful video, I’m planning to return to the store and picking up a bottle now that I understand the propaganda.

Most of the researchers have concluded that mustard oil is healthier compared to olive oil because of its ideal ratio of fatty acids. It has both omega-3 and 6 in sufficient quantity which makes it excellent for better heart health. In olive oil, this ideal proportion is missing besides being expensive.

They place so many additives in our food in general which are actually banned overseas and worry about mustard oil🥴

Not sure what the "in Europe" is referring to. In Germany you can buy cold pressed mustard oil for cooking in supermarkets and a lot of small oil mills. It's not even expensive.

I love cooking Indian food, and I believe I'm quite accomplished. Every time I experience a new flavour I try in earnest to discover how it is produced, and with which ingredient. Recently I discovered that mustard oil was something of an undiscovered ingredient for me - but was concerned about these claims of it being unhealthy. I've done a fair bit of reading regarding this, but this video taught me more than everything previously - so thank you very much! I'll now continue to enjoy it!

We Bengalees cook almost every other dish in Mustard oil.
But this video definitely bursts the myth about why it has been banned in the US.

Thank you sir!! Finally the mystery of the label on mustard oil bottles “ for external use only” in US, UK and Canada is solved. Thanks so much! Now I can share this excellent info with those friends who hesitate to use mustard oils available in Indian stores.
All your videos have great info. 👍👍

Glad I found this.

After spending about half an hour looking for a bottle of mustard oil without the "External use only" label, I learned from the staff that this label is required by US regulations only. I've always used mustard oil in certain recipes and can't imagine making them without it.
