Steam Deck is more than a handheld, it's a whole product category and it's got its eyes set on GAMING LAPTOPS. Instead of a Gaming Laptop and a Nintendo Switch for college, you can now feasibly buy a Steam Deck instead and cover all the bases! But will deck-style handhelds ever truly be able to replace the ever-popular gaming laptop? Let's discuss on today's episode of Water Break.

Is Steam Deck the END of Gaming Laptop Supremacy? Comment below!

Thanks for the great response to this video! Just wanted to say, I have no idea why I kept saying "run the battery dry" today. Don't do that lol. At 10:26 I say to charge it up to 80% and then let drain only to 20% and this is what I really meant to say. Ignore the moments running up to that when I said "dry". Literally don't know what I was thinking when I said that. Wishing you all a healthy battery and a healthy life :)

I keep buying Switch games that I already have on PC just to play them portably, now with this thing I can stop doing that lol.

I was never really into gaming lap tops, for all the reasons you mentioned. But I love the idea of the deck. There are so many titles I'd love to play on that thing.

You’re 100% right, most of the time my gaming laptop is just on my desk. The only time i have it on my lap is occasionally playing MMOs on the couch.

Most excited for what the Steam Deck means for Linux gaming as a whole. Looks like I won’t be getting my 512GB model until Q3 2022, but I’ll be running Arch Linux on my main rig as soon as anti-cheat gets sorted and compatibility is near 100%

And just like that, suddenly the PC community realizes, graphics master race aside, we just want a convenient way to play games.

Weirdly Deck looks less cringily "gamer" than most gaming laptops. It just tries to make itself slick, gaming laptops still try to look like 2000s futuristic tech

My groin area is pretty heated when I look at the steam deck

The gaming laptop I'm using to watch this video: chuckles "I'm in danger."

I'm gonna buy this no doubt. The only thing holding it back is the stock available.

Bang on. I have an ASUS TUF FX505 DV with a R7 3750h and RTX 2060.

I take it to my gfs house quite a bit and 99% of the time doesnt come out my bag cause I cant be bothered with all the setup and get the switch instead.

Also, I have had two expensive gaming laptops and they both became useless after overheating over and over. I hope the Deck has a great cooling solution.

Valve is targeting Windows in the long run, but I agree that laptops are in trouble for gaming. There is also the problem of the power brick gaming laptops need. A type C cable is much easier to pack in your backpack.

Having a device like this that is portable and doesn't have the intentional limitations of console is a game changer. Deck is just a PC that fits in your hands. It's wild and I am so excited to get mine

You missed noting that the Steam deck demo video shows a person using the touchpad in COMBINATION WITH GYRO! (watch his movements) Learning to combine either the sticks or the touchpads with gyro is absolutely key, regarding completely replacing a separate mouse. Although I have 30+ years of hard core pc gaming experience, the last 2-3 years I have played all my FPS-games using my PS4-controllers through the steam gyro-implementation.. Fully tweaked and calibrated with no gyro “dead zones” steams implementation is fantastic, and infinitely much better than the gyro implementation on switch.

I really like that my new laptop has a setting to keep the battery at 60% so I can leave it plugged in indefinitely. Game changer 🙌

The main Switch demographic the Steam Deck will absorb is those who only own a Switch to play games we already own elsewhere but on the go. Mine will be complementary to my RTX 2060 laptop, replacing my Switch for those very moments you talk about

i can't imagine most college students ever wanting to bring both a "deck" and a separate keyboard around to their lectures... then again, the ipad is way more popular than i ever anticipated (i still honestly don't have a personal use case for them)
