I read an article today that advised using a harder ball during winter, as the course and the greens tend to be wetter and a softer ball won't travel as far during drives and putts.

Good advice, don't be seduced by marketing, brand or price. See what you can find in the hedges and the rough or buy a selection and try them out on the practice area, putting green and course. When you find something you like then go with that and buy some, always works for me. Better to try before you buy and see what gives you the feel and how the ball stands up to scuffing and remember there are some less fashinable balls out there that are real gems that should not be overlooked.

Putting feel is the key. I don't like too soft as I have a soft face insert on my putter and I like to feel the contact of the ball, but without it being loud or clicky.

AD333/Kirkland/Chrome Soft are balls I've found the best of both worlds for performance/feel.

easily the worst video I've seen on this topic.. in summary, get what feels right to you, and what sound you like to hear... no other data points mentioned. They make soft balls that feel hard and hard balls that feel soft... they make balls for everyone. YES that is why were here. What does a softer ball tend to do with a lower spin rate? Run further or stop. What should I do around the greens vs off the tee... What compression rating should I match to my swing speed? None of those questions answered... smh
