I couldn't agree more. Memorizing the number bonds that add to ten is the one little trick that makes all of the rest of mathematics easier. It makes adding easier because you can gather together the numbers that make 10. It makes multiplying sixes, sevens, eights and nines easier because multiplying the number bonds will give you the last digit. eg. 8 x 8 = _4 from 2 X 2 =4. When you are young and it is not obvious why that's true it is a nice surprise. Children like these nice coincidences. 1 + 2 + 3 +4 = 10 for instance. There is a lot to investigate in 1 + 2 + 3 +4 = 10 and it is a nice aha moment when you see that the 1+4 = 5 and the 2 + 3 = 5.
