I’m a military officer and Im going be honest it’s not what you think it is, most pilots can’t wait to leave the service. Mostly because you’re an officer first then a pilot. Also many pilot want to leave because of pay the airline pay is very lucrative with seniority so many try to leave as soon as possible to get their time.

A lot of people recommend going into the military to build flight hours. It’s not as good of an option as it sounds. Not only would I not recommend the military in this train wreck that the DoD has become, but while you might come out with all your flight hours and great training, that’s a 4-6 year commitment and a lot of that time won’t even be flying.

Dont associate the military with giving you flight training, ask any military pilot they will laugh at that idea. Needs of the military first, not yours.

If you’re a pilot and you want to join the military a little piece of advice: try the reserves or guard. That way you can fly for whatever airline and take some time off a couple days a month flying whatever military aircraft. I do not recommend active duty military flying because you don’t fly that often. When you’re in the reserves or guard, you have to keep flying a couple days a month to stay proficient on your airframe, all the while making a good living flying in the airlines.

Most of us who are in the military and ending our pilot careers wish we would have done it the civilian way. While its been a priveledge and weve had some adventures, most of our souls have been crushed these last 5 years. Its a 13ish year contract usually.

My advice to my younger self would be….”Find your own passion, figure out what motivates you to get up every morning and keeps you moving forward in life”

That guy is nice.
I talked to him and asked him a few questions as well.

He is STILL a Flight Instructor.

Hes talking about structure for his life. Like holding yourself accountable, being responsible etc.

I was prior enlisted in the military. Definitely needs of the military first. If you wanna be an airline pilot I’d say the military isn’t your first choice. Currently getting my A&P license. 2 separate worlds. All hardworking people.

750 hours instead of 1500 hour requirement. Free flight training and get paid during hour building and training. Contract is long. You don't build hours as quickly as you could outside. You can be a CFI on the weekends.

Did 3 years of air cadets and fuckin hated it. We did 2 outtings in those 3 years to an airport, and both times were to ride passenger in a glider. Almost like a "field trip". Everything else was outdoor survival "in case you're shot down", living off MREs, all that shit. It was like other people are saying, military first, pilot second.

The advice applies more to structure and routine than to actual flight training. Part 61 schools will allow you to be prepared to finsh necessary training in a matter of months instead of years for the disciplined and self motivated.

If you want to fly, you had better look at the needs of the military _before_ you sign the dotted line. If you do it correctly, then you get trained without going $100k or more in debt. It's better to fly multi-crew planes than single seat fighters. Don't be combative in the flight deck. Luck and timing are critical to the outcome you get out both the military and flying.

lol all 🧢 from this man . Anybody in the aviation industry knows that anyone with military flight experience has an automatic foot in the door that’s the real reason he said he would’ve gotten military because it would’ve saved him from going to the regionals.
