Apartment Sessions Season 2: Episode 8 -- Undone/Sincerity (Ingenuine Mermen)

Music and Lyrics by Drew Krasner
Arranged by Drew Krasner
Kraz Section by Luke McGinnis
Sound - Evan Tyor
Video - Elizabeth Maney

Though Ingenuine Mermen is a playful and absurd name, it alludes to the existential confusion caused by our collective detachment from history and the rapidly advancing technological intelligences that we are figuring out how to live with. We can now hide inside invisible walls, immerse ourselves in alternate realities, leave essential parts of ourselves here and there without noticing. Eye-to-eye connections suffer and inner worlds become debilitatingly fractured. How do we deal with this?

“Undone” and “Sincerity” are both curious inquiries into how we can think about these psychological issues on the personal and communal level. The final result of this session gives me hope that our age of isolation and loneliness has cracks in it, that the light shines through on its own, that it is our job to slowly pry open the entry points with concerted hands.

"Sincerity" Lyrics
VERSE 1

one time for the online insults
two times for the permanent pencils
sweat stains on the digital sweatpants
profile got anthroposentience

three times for the like-check complex
am i liked am i liked am i liked yet?
keep the dialogue down to a monologue
two track mind with a democratic demagogue

cold sweat on the sterilized heart
staging the pictures to edit the arc of the
pose of the century
the case of the mistress identity
is sleeping with enemies
and kissin on mirrors she barely sees
one line for the on-time insults
insecure souls leave their shit on your seashores

VERSE 2

dear public diary
are we all metafiction prodigies?
verbal diarrhea or
Homer’s postmodern odyssey?

i said what i said without speaking a word
Dr. Seuss wrote by observing the birds
he rhymed shit that rhymed and delivered the word
on time and with grace for all to be heard

god hasn’t died yet
he’s chillin in cryo with Tupac
and Nietzsche and rhinos and whatever else
we might lose in this psychopath epoch

so get off your iPad and nuzzle some dirt
make friends with a stranger ask where they hurt
delete your personas and fashion a self
make peace with a demon and build him a shelf

Additional thanks to Cynthia Meng, Will Leet, and Dane Scozzari.

And the quest to find Adam Neely begins again. It's like a new version of Finding Waldo.

One of the things I love about these sessions is how the music is often complex and performed with a large ensemble. Two factors that would benefit from having a large open space where all the musicians can see each other and the conductor. Recording is a series of tiny rooms is perverse in a way that makes me smile every time.... not sure what that says about me, but there you are.

Not a musician, just love music. There's a lot of talent in that little apartment. And what fun it must be to be there.
Look forward to every post.

Surprised you got Adam Neely on, he's the only Rapman player in NY and there's huge demand.

The moment at 6:40 where the singer does the finger guns really makes this for me. To me it shows that the priority here is enjoying music and not having everything perfectly polished. I've been enjoying your videos so much! Thanks for all the hard work (and smiles/laughter) you put into this channel.

Did he just use the word diarrhea in a existential rap accompanied by an ensemble of instruments that includes a vibraphone and a casio rapman? Cuz you know, that's cool

XD Chris at the end, the typical beatboxer. Can't be in possession of a microphone without making noises for more than 4secs

Try getting that ensemble into a jazz club, it's more like a mini orchestra
