How do I look at my wound? | J. Krishnamurti

Extract from the fifth seminar at Brockwood Park, 1978.

---

This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.

The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.'

We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms.

Without the wound I am nobody. With the wound I am somebody, an image I call "me", "myself", "I".

- How do I look at my wound?

- Start by giving your pain the freedom to open itself. When you give it that freedom, it opens and withers away.

- But the reality is, it still persists.

- It persists because you've never truly looked at it. When you do, approach it without prejudice, conclusions, or preconceived ideas. Be curious and eager.

- I usually expect it to hurt, and that makes me afraid to look at it.

- Exactly. That expectation is influenced by your conditioning. But remember, being afraid and expecting pain isn’t really approaching it. Be aware of how this conditioning shapes your reactions.

- So, it’s my conditioning that’s making me identify with the wound?

-Yes, and what’s truly hurt is the image you’ve created about yourself. That’s what you need to see clearly.

Part of observing the wound is to also see the beliefs we formed in the process of the wound's manifestation (both in relation to others who may have caused the wound as well as ourselves) - such as "he or she did this or that to me on purpose (for reasons I can only assume), " "something must be wrong with me for others to criticize, ridicule, or reject me, " "I am less than or not good enough, " "I am unworthy or undeserving, " "I am a failure, " and countless others. These beliefs simply allow the wound to fester, and, invariably, spread like an infection to other parts of our life.

Thank you this is so so powerful!

He is helping us to be Free!

The questions are excellent because we show through them that we are attached to the notions and ideas that create the very fear that we run away from and they can’t let of their ideas go so they the ideas end up defining them and keeping them/me in fear.

Finally, JK mishearing the last questioner was priceless when the questioner said “craving” and JK thought he said “craziness” was priceless.

You all are so fortunate to go through these videos and I am so grateful to you for your compassion in sharing them with us.

Thank you….

A wound is an image of the past. When you approach a wound, seek to heal it, just as you do with wounds in the present. An old wound in bloody bandages will not heal on its own. when you carefully remove the old bandages, you will find that it does not exist in the present, it only exists as a false image that you carry in your egoic mind. Prune the unproductive branches you have created through your tree of knowledge, instead nurture the productive branches on your tree of life. Seek and ye shall find.

Yes, this is a tricky one. I am the wound, so how am I supposed to look at it? I cannot, so this fundamental truth is the fundamental change.

By escaping, conquering, ignoring fear for example implies duality which in essence, is conflict. We are identified strongly to our suffering because we desire security and all this is a trap. ONE is to stay with our limitations and understand our place as being thought, memory and time and let true intelligence reveal itself without effort. The is to die constantly through constant observation.

Being brought up by an alcoholic father and a codependent mother, then educated by brutal teachers and being submitted to violence everywhere leaves a deep wound on a child's psychology regardless of how much time is spent looking at the wound. Such persons are only too aware of these causal facts that they can watch until the end of time, which changes neither the wounds themselves nor the toxic environment in which they live. It's like saying my car will fix itself after an accident just by watching it. Whether physical or psychological, a wound is a wound and it always leaves a scar that can be so deep as to cause permanent disability for life.

Doesn't the wound dissolve as you stay with it?

All religions teach us to run away from wounds. The Buddha pure version is to let it feel free. Later they gave it a form & a path & going around the circle. So no religion can free us from wounds inside. Millions of years of conditioning is the steel barrier, made during human evolution. That barrier is us, wounds are us, we are the wounds.... just watch & see...

One MUST face the aggressive dog, shark or mountain lion, turn your back and death is certain. Why would an inner wound be any different? the pain on approach the wound is the shark knowing it's been spotted, you are now a threat to ITS existence.

An approach or for that matter any approach is from one object to another; or subject to object; or past flowing through present to future; cause becoming an effect and the effect in its own turn becoming the cause of another effect and so on on. An endless chain ⛓️ (actually shackles) in which humanity has been trapped from time immemorial.

Now the question ❓ is, is it possible for a void to approach another void ? Or the void itself indivisible and integrated whole; incorruptible, absolute, timeless and eternal. Not my void and your void and all that blah blah. As there are no objects and therefore no time this indivisible whole is always new, fresh, young and innocent --- free from the burden of all time. Therefore logically a new brain 🧠 with a new instrument 🎸 and function has already germinated --- yes again in the human brain itself. Please not yours or mine but the human brain 🧠 per se. The old brain is already shrinking, withering, being worn out --- isn't it. This is the essence of all redemption, deliverance and salvation --- cleansing the brain of its contents of time-thougt. Tabula rasa. Even if this takes place in one single individual; then humanity is already at the threshold of giving birth to a new species of brain cells (in its own brain). No genetic manipulation, no computer programming, no prayer, no meditation, no scl-fi thriller, --- but an actual daily fact of life. Not just repeating others (borrowed) words endlessly.Otherwise humanity is squandering away what could possibly be the greatest responsibility . Basta.
