4 pumps on the accelerator then keep it halfway down and turn the key. It’s worked for me all the forty something years of driving my ‘63.

One of Volkswagens ad campaigns in the 70s was "How does the snow plow driver get to work?" with a picture of a Beetle just driven to a plow. So, of course it will start!

The long cranking before starting can actually be beneficial because it begins pushing the cold, thick oil to the bearings before the first combustion stresses.

Hearing that cold start brought back memories of high school when I drove 1961 beetle and a 69 squareback

That beetle has been well looked after!
Doesn't look her age at all!
Any battery tips for sub zero temperatures?

Berthoud Co.! It can be so cold that the gas as it travels through all of those cold steel passages can’t really atomize into small droplets. The use of starting fluid will minimize the wear and tear on the starter and battery.

Sounds like my 1966 Corvair convertible on a cold start

Tommy believed or not, You're Blessed, please don't sell that car! Maybe isn't a Holly Grail, but, it's yours... keep it!

Absolutely beautiful. I envy you for getting to drive one of my favorite vehicles ever made in my favorite conditions. I would love to drive it around out there bro

My experience with air-cooled VWs in freezing weather is that the engine will idle rough until the carb is warmed up.
But once the engine is warmed up, it loves the cold air.
However, heating the driver/passengers compartment is another story. If the 'heat-exchanger' is faulty, carbon monoxide can fill the cabin when trying to warm up the car's interior. That's what happened to my VW Beetle.

Once, while starting my '70 on a -18F morning the transmission was frozen into 1st gear when though the stick shift was in N! After it started I drove in circles in the couldesac for several minutes before she was warm enough to disengage 😄

Never happened again

I hope you have a grade of ail appropriate to the ambient temperature. You can shear off oil pump drives on some motors if they are trying to pump treacle!

Only bad thing about that beetle they didn't come with heaters I'm going to take the heat off the engine and put it up there where you're at but they didn't work with the crap but they're really fun to drive LOL matter of fact that the commercial they had for the Volkswagen was how do you think the snow plow driver just to the plow and here comes a Volkswagen Bug busting through the snow got to love them😊

Press the pedal to the floor once to set the choke, then leave the pedal alone and turn the key, it will start, if you press the pedal while cranking, you will release the choke

I drove my '67 Beetle to work this morning. It was a balmy +27F when I left this morning. Tomorrow morning's drive will be a little colder at 17.
