After naruto and his team managed to beat kaguya. Madara was forcibly released from his jinjuriki form. Before he took his last breath..he told hasirama that everything he had done was a mistake.

it is far more believable that Hashirama and Madara are really good friends, it is hard to believe Naruto and Sasuke being even just friends because Sasuke from the beginning had very selfish goals and ideals

To be fair, Madara's dream wasn't crushed by any inheritors of Hashirama's dream, but rather by some BS goddess. Madara himself would have totally crushed Naruto and Sasuke and implemented his IT plan without a hitch.
