I chose to have Fentanyl and versed anesthesia for oral surgery years ago. My 70s something year old oral surgeon told me that I would go to sleep and not remember a thing. "Oh really? Watch this!" I told him I had been on pain management for years and had a high tolerance to these types of medications. After the nurse had prepped me she comes back and is standing in the door watching me. I hear him down the hall say "is she sleeping" she says "no." he said "what's she doing?" she says "she's just sitting there looking at me." He comes back in the room asking me "how are you awake??" I told you so! I never fell asleep and remember the whole thing. I was however high as a kite and didn't care.

I was in a bad motorcycle accident at the age of 25 my right foot was 90% amputated my hip socket was destroyed I never went unconscious the amazing doctors replanted my right foot microsurgery. 13 hr operations while conscious during this I kept waking up and saying that the the anesthesia wasn't working. The most painful was when cut under my belly button open and they stuck a scope and look at my kidneys that were bleeding profusely and that was the worst. But I'm grateful very grateful because I was able to work until retirement and raise a family thanks to the surgeons and all the technicians have worked on me.

Being awake during surgery is the most HORRIBLE experience EVER!!!! Happened to me 3x and I absolutely HATE it and it terrifies. PTSD is nothing to ignore, and doctors love to play cat and mouse sometimes.

Going under anesthesia is most always talked about as "going to sleep". The reality is that you aren't going to sleep. You are being rendered unconscious.

Before surgery, you receive an anti-anxiety or benzodiazepine so that you aren't tense and nervous. Then comes the maybe propofol to knock you out. Then the parakytic so that you can be intubated. Then pain control. Medications or gases that stop memory formation. Maintenance pain control through your procedure. You are completely uncoscious and fully reliantand dependent upon this man properly supplying you with whatever (cheiefly ensuring you're receivig oxygen and breathing) but oxygen, maybe nitrous, maybe more pain control, depth of anesthesia (sufficient but not too much) and then ultimately oxygenating and waking you for recovery. He knows that you're detecting pain if/when your blood pressure begins to increase. Your life is copletely in the hands of your anaesthesiologist when you have syrgery. It is truly fascinating and why these guys make some big bucks.

If it is checks and balances then Michael Jackson & Doctor Conrad Murray definitely overdrafted that checking account.

I had surgery when I was 35 weeks pregnant and cried at the anesthesiologist. I begged him to only give me what was absolutely necessary to hold me down. The look on his face, bless his heart. He said, "I promise I won't give you more than you absolutely need..."

I nodded, sobbing like a child...

To the best of my knowledge, nothing bad happen during my liver transplant. I don’t remember the anesthesiologist, but everything went well.❤

I have had 13 surgeries and never once has a anesthesiologist given me something to calm me when I asked for it except this last time I had a cervical fusion in July and they actually read my previous report and found out I wake up panicked so they gave me Benadryl so I’d wake up easier. I just wish they would just let me linger in that almost under state so I could just feel the stress leave my body and yeah enjoy the euphoria for a minute or two

Unfortunately patients are not giving themselves their meds - it's you guys. If YOU give too much... You've got the access. So just wait. Patients sometimes don't know how stoned they are😊

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, they put me under anesthesia. I mentally woke up mid-surgery but didn't open my eyes. I couldn't really hear, but a few words here and there. I didn't feel any pain, but I could feel them breaking my teeth and pulling them out. I was just tapping my fingers on the handrail for about 10 mins before I heard one of them say, "ohp, she's awake. Give her a little more."
And out I went.
I woke up groggy, and my vision had a clouded ring like I was watching "Kye-U" (idk how to spell it).
My dad just laughed at me and took me home.
On the way home, I was texting a friend, telling them I just finished my surgery. They asked how I was doing.
I wrote, "ok, just really groggy."
Waited the whole car ride home for a reply. Never got one.
We got home, and I got out of the car by myself. My dad asked if I was ok and if I needed help. I told him I was fine and "drunk-walked" inside and plopped on the couch where I passed out again.
Dad came every 15-30 minutes to change my ice pack or to give me medicine.
I officially woke up about 3-4 hrs later.
My vision was normal again, just tired from the sleep.
I looked back at my messages again and realized why my friend never responded. I forgot to hit send.

When someone asks, the anesthesiologist just nods and says ok…while you pass out from the first and only dose you’re getting! Lol

Seriously? Any competent anesthesia provider is not going to give a fatal overdose simply because the patient asked for more. 🙄

Last time I had surgery I told them I have had a hard time waking up after my last two surgeries. I don't know what they gave me to wake me up but I didn't sleep until 4am the next day.
