One correction about the summary is that the reason Marjane is sent to live at the boarding house was because her mother's friend essentially threw her out due to some deep seeded dislike of Marjane and her family. she was very nasty to Marjane as soon as they met at the airport
My guess is that Zozo (the name of the moms friend) was embarrassed by how poorly, financially, her life was in Vienna compared to Marjane and her family. In Iran she was her husband's secretary and he was a big shot with a very well paying job. However in Vienna they had to start over, the husband constantly looking for work and Zozo bringing in the only income by being a hairdresser
Maybe when Marjane was sent there, it was too much, yes Marjane was sent there to escape tyrannical Iran but her family still had money, they even sent over 3000 shillings to pay for Marjanes living expenses. That must have been a kick in the teeth to have your friends daughter have more spending money than you make in a month.
Zozo even kept the money after throwing Marjane out for almost years, it was only until after she had spent time being homeless and almost died did Marjane get the money back, its what financed her trip home to Iran for the return. Yet to think, your friend sends her daughter to you to escape a war torn country, not only do you kick her out but you kept the money the mom sent for her well being for years while that child struggled on her own in a country she didn't know.
Get this, she's barely sorry either, Marjane comes to get the money and Zozo asks where she's been for so long and before Marjane can answer the phone rings and she walks off like "well whatever heres the money I gotta get the phone" like don't act like this is some big chore for you that was her money you kept for yourself you bitter bint
Oh that moment got me so angry, but that's what's good about the book (mine was the complete version so it was only one book) you can always find one moment that gets a conversation going because you can relate to something or look objectively at how she handled certain things and say ok but here's how I would have done it or I agree with her that person was being very disagreeable. I suggest everyone to read it and discuss what parts of her story spark something in you.
