Making a New York Sour!

Thanks to Original Grain for sponsoring today's video!

Today I'm making a New York Sour! With the addition of a red wine float, this was an early riff on the whiskey sour and it dates back to the late 1800s. Does it work? Yes. Is it delicious? Yes. Is it pretty to look at? Yes. Is it from New York? Nope (I'll explain). With properly floated red wine, the New York Sour maintains a beautiful separation right down to the last sip. This one is for both the wine lovers and the cocktail enthusiasts out there - we all win! Cheers!

Please write a book! You two have amazing aesthetics and I bet a book from y’all would look amazing on any bar or coffee table, plus be filled with amazing sips, tips, and recipes! Not to mention the history and stories of cocktails!

What a lovely piece of glassware you had! You two should to an AMA one day. Great video as always! Highlight of my Fridays!

Love this cocktail. I was put off by the idea of wine mixing with a sour cocktail when I first heard about this. But after giving it a shot, I prefer it to a normal sour. The red wine gives a nice balance to the sweet/sour flavors of a normal whisky sour.

This is one of my favourite cocktails, and surprisingly versatile depending on the ingredients, you could try a port finished whiskey and really lean into the berry notes throughout the drink, or go whole hog and try a port float.
I made one recently with a stout float up top and it was DELICIOUS! kinda like a dark chocolate and lemon candy.

Whenever I make this I use a cask strength whiskey, usually Maker's Mark. For any type of sour. Maple syrup & Lemon juice. I rarely use simple syrup. For the wine I use Black Box Malbec.

This has quickly become one of my favorites. My wife and I had a date night at Jose Andres' BarMini the other week and had a New York Sour sorbet. They partially froze the cocktail with liquid nitrogen, folded it into a sorbet, then floated the red wine on top. It was 🤯

What's it all about if we're not having fun, right? Great episode as usual! I also love that your dad watches - so wholesome

My bar has a variation on the New York Sour that’s sweetened with Amaretto instead of syrup. It’s extremely popular.

I made these as a treat for when my wife got home from work a ways back. She was late so I put them in the freezer to stay chilled. The wine ended up going just a bit slushy and we really loved it. 🤷🤷
Worth a try if it sounds fun to anyone, haha

I had a couple come to my bar a couple months back because somebody told them I made a great New York sour. Unbeknownst to me, my partner that night thought he made a pretty decent New York sour too so it became a bit of a friendly contest to see who made a better one. I served the lady & he made one for the gentleman. When I saw him pull the rocks glass I thought back to your video & pulled out a chilled coupe & did your spoon trick. I’d been meaning to come here & let you know that thanks to your video I won that little competition & got a pretty nice tip to with it at the end of the night. So thanks Anders! I owe you one!

I am in the carribean and missing my sours, so I made this with 12 Yr. Aged Rum, Homemade Banana Liqueur, Lime, Egg White and a slightly sweet Malbec I found down here with a sprinkle of nutmeg on top. Was amazing.

I drink a lot of whiskey. And, I drink a lot of wine. I never would have imagined drinking them together, but this...just...works.

At my bar we do a riff on a New York sour that we call a dresser drawer - it is basically an upside down New York sour but instead of wine we use chambord. It’s delicious!

Note for the original grain site. It tries to add in a free little bottle opener to your cart that disables your 30% discount.
If you remove it, it will re-add it to the cart after a second or two. You have to remove that from cart and quickly hit checkout before it re-adds so you can actually get the 30%.

Started making these during the pandemic and it quickly became one of our faves. We use a stronger bourbon like Knob Creek or Wild Turkey 101. Love how simple it is to make and yet what a cool looking drink that makes a great impression with your guests!
