Keith actually tunes open g then he transitions from 5th fret to 3rd and continues with the same hammer on for the bluesy riff, I think it sound better than the pinky!! But whatever, , each to their own. Sounds great man!

This is for to get close on standard tuning.
Doesn't matter if you talked the 6th string off, but it's sounds weird because you're not in open g

"Start Me Up" was released in 1980 long after the British Invasion years of the 1960's but still has that early Stones feel to it. Keith Richards was no showboat of a guitarist but when the perfect riff was needed he'd provide it.
