The Digital Collage

Adapted from a talk I give students, this little discussion explains how modern day concept "paintings" are in fact more of a collage of 3d, photographs and then digital paint on top. We discuss the technique, a little about where it came from, and I gave multiple examples of how the three work together.

Wow this is really good. Always wondered why some do their stuff in 3d then take it into photoshop for further tweaking. Very insightful.

Yes, a very handy, fast and satisfying technique. Unless the client says: "Can you change the angle of the shot." But I guess in that's not an issue in concept art so much.

Any tips for organizing digital assets so it's easy to find 3d models or a photo of a perfect sky that you took? I'm on the lookout for a good DAM or even just a thoughtful workflow to search and sort different media types.
