Honestly, I can't help but think that after the first part of the song he is singing this from the perspective of a man that is loosing his daughter to drugs or mental illness. His voice seems to be filled to the brim with extreme pain, desperation, anger, and self hatred. He feels like he failed her. He keeps wondering how he could have let this happen, convincing himself he could have prevented it if he had done things differently or seen the signs earlier. He doesn't know how to fix the situation and feels completely and utterly powerless to change things. He just hopes and prays that someway, somehow, she finds the strength within herself to overcome it.

Just my take on his cover. The original by Sara Bareilles is one of my favorite songs of all time. Caleb Hyles definitely does it justice. Absolutely beautiful.

Maybe it's because I'm sick and emotional. But I, a 28 year old man, cried like a baby to this... it resonated with me in a way few things have ever. Caleb, I want you to know that I truly enjoy every video you put out. I've heard a bunch of versions of this song. And out of all the male covers, I always end up coming back to this one. I'm not going to say I know all about singing (i dont), but none of them feel...right. And then there's this version. The pacing of it. The range, the pitches, the high's and the lows. The way it seems like a whisper as if it's a song not meant to be heard. Like the voice is going to crack from holding back the tears. Those final notes on the chorus, holding on at the last few "She used to be mine" verses, wavering the voice.

As i said, I've heard a number of them. And all of them are great. But this, in my opinion, is top quality. If people ask me for any songs to recommend from your repertoire, I'd put this one down as the first one to listen to without a doubt.
