I used to watch C-Span lectures on American History and the Constitution. One of the lecturers, forgive me for not remembering name, pointed our that on one of the later drafts of that document the words "life, liberty and property" appear in Jefferson's hand. However, the word "property" had been struck through, and above it, in John Adams hand, were the words "pursuit of happiness."
I read Greenblatt's work shortly after publication. I have always been "Epicurean" in my thinking. It was that work that gave me a label for it.
We live in an Epicurean culture smeared with a monotheistic veneer. That's a serious contradiction.
