What are some of the books you'll be reading this winter? ❄📚

Tokyo Ueno Station had me in tears in parts. The part towards the end where the Emperor goes through the park in particular. The weight of the subtext was devastating in that whole part and I just started weeping, almost ugly-crying suddenly. So I think the author did a fantastic job; I was ready to be disgusted by some pampered rich-kid, champagne socialist-type, a clueless outsider trying to imagine up the world of the homeless and mentally, emotionally shredded and use it as some cheap device in order to deliver some Hard Left political diatribe in velvet gloves with exploitative, mawkish silliness thrown in. But it wasn't like that at all. I wonder who else loved the book even though it haunted them and made them cry? I thought about it for weeks afterwards, in random snippets of flashback as if it were about a real person. What an accomplishment to be so plain in your writing but convey such believable depth in a character. Wonder what you'll have to say about it in your future review Tanya?

I am a big fan of National Book Awards. They made me discover authors like Colson Whitehead. This year's winner, Interior Chinatown, was an eye opener for me about the lives of the Chinese-American community and now I want to read more from Charles Yu.

I will also be reading The Invention of Morel this Winter. Happy coincidence – my copy of that Casares novella arrived on my porch this morning from Amazon. I ordered it a couple days ago. It had been on my list of things to get since I learned of it in one of your earlier videos.

Completely agree with you on Emma! It's actually my favorite of her books for me so far, though. Northanger Abbey is my close second. Persuasion is the only one I haven't read yet. I'm excited to hear what you think about it!

As far as remaking classic books as modern movies, 'Clueless' is not lauded enough. What a work of comic, cinematic genius! So much fun. What a clever way to take this book to a new audience. Every key scene from the book has been reimagined and features in the film. Director Amy Heckerling even said that it wasn't supposed to be based on any 'real' reality of the teen world at that time-- the fashions in the film were NOT pulled from real life and neither were any of the slang words the characters continued to use; in this way she created an alternative version of that 'period drama bubble'. Genius. I remember watching at the time and thinking, 'this is NOT a normal, dumb teen comedy...something else is going on here'. Why the 'Emma-Jane Austen' angle was not part of the film's publicity at the time is a mystery of strategy to me, rather than oversight but I could be wrong. Either way, not speaking up and going on and on about that was what made the film even more brilliant. I found Emma an infuriating character also. What a fantastic book though. :)

What Lovely books on your list. I see you also have Piranesi ....I just read that and it was utterly and incredibly wonderful...

I am in my usual December reading slump as December is always the busiest time in the bookstore. Well now we are closed again, so let's see if I will be back in my reading mood. I started Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik and am reading a bookish advent calendar called How Winston delivered Christmas.
Emma is on my wishlist as well, I recently watched the new movie but was a bit underwhelmed.

I think I’ve read all of Austen and out of all I think Persuasion is the most... elegant? Maybe that it why many people like it.. I think it is good!

The Invention of morel and Zama sound so interesting!! Might try them!

I am reading this month several books! Finishing Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata this week (inspired by you of course hehe), and cuurently also reading Nausea by Sartre,
After that I will read Night Flight by Antoine de Saint-Exupery and The Temple of Golden Pavillion by Mishima. Will I be able to finish all this month? ahhh

Great selection hope you enjoy them. I only read Persuasion by Jane Austen, in fact the only Austen that I ever read I really liked it. I tried to read Pride and Prejudice years ago but couldn't finish the first chapter maybe one day I will give it another try. ☺️

I hope you enjoy your books. Piranesi does sound strange but it made me curious. I'd love to read it too

I can't wait to hear what your thoughts on Emma when you finish! It's one of my favorites, but I went into it already having seen various adaptions. By far, I think it's one of Austen's best works.

I'm currently rereading Sense and Sensibility and it's so much fun. I hope you enjoy Persuasion! I didn't like it :/

I've never read Emma but slapping her across the face has me wanting to pick the book up more than anything else hahaha

I have not read Zama, but I've seen the movie directed by Lucrecia Martel who is an argentinian filmmaker, and i remember it was very...strange lol. I'm curious what you'll think of the book. However, I have read some of Di Benedetto's short stories and liked them well enough.
I'm currently reading A Deadly Education by Naomi Novic which I heard mixed reviews about but I liked her book Spinning Silver so i'm giving it a try, and in the next months I plan to read Stephen King's The Stand and of course reread at least some parts of Don Quijote, or the whole book if i really get into it 😊

Pride and Prejudice is my most favourite Jane Austen novel. Emma is my least favourite. I love Persuasion too. Austen is a great writer of society and her novels have many levels.
