Philanthropy can be innovative | Bill Gates and Melinda Gates | Code Conference 2016

Bill and Melinda Gates talk with The Verge's Walt Mossberg about the sixth anniversary of the Gates Foundation's Giving Pledge, which commits billionaires to give most of their wealth to charitable causes. They argue that many wealthy entrepreneurs underestimate their own ability to apply business innovation to philanthropy. Melinda Gates is currently focused on improving women's access to contraception, while Bill Gates says vaccination efforts in the Middle East will completely wipe out polio worldwide by 2017. He also discusses how he views recent advances in artificial intelligence: "The dream is finally arriving."

Mr. Gates is not physically aging well...as someone who grew up with the PC industry and not having seen him in awhile, it is a surprise to see him as a senior citizen...but he's only 60, and I thought money was supposed to keep people young...I guess that awful Seattle weather did that to him...he should move the whole thing to Tucson or San Diego or something, maybe take up surfing!

There is a massive migration going on from poor countries which product more kids than the economies can support. These countries will never improve until their people can reduce family size and think about something besides how to survive starvation. How can parents who spend all their energy simply subsisting from one day to the next be expected to think beyond the next meal to build anything at all in their countries. The last thing they need is more children to worry about and try to feed. It is also presumptuous to think that all the unnecessary kids, the population overflow, should be financially supported by the West. Uncontrolled reproduction without the means of supporting the resulting kids is the cause of massive migration to South Africa - the vast majority of migrants suffering horribly without a chance at the grail promised to them by various media sources and smugglers. The most humane thing to do for these countries is to focus on eliminating uncontrolled reproduction. These women must have a choice.

Why does the giving pledge sound like a tax write off to avoid estate taxes. Why not pay your employees now and the give slaves overseas that have made you all that money enough to live, now, while you are still alive. Better yet put some of that money back into Windows 10, so you don't have to scam your customers into paying more on the free upgrade so that you can be rake i more cash to be a hero by pledging to give money when you die. Words are words. Has anyone looked into the tax laws into this or if any of these amazing heroes actually keep their word when they leave this place. I apologize if I'm out of line here but the media is full of #$% most of the time and windows is a &&^^% disaster. Turn off the auto-updates Bill and quit forcing me use Microsoft programs that are Beta version at best that don't work and are outrageously priced on a "free" operating system. I got scammed by the 360 debacle and red ring of death and my hard drive wasn't compatible with the slim version. I ddn't believe when I read it was the exact same hard drive, you just made it different to force your loyal customers to buy another hard drive. After spending thousands on your products I didn't believe it and had to open it up myself and sure enough it plugged right in to the new unit. So sorry if I lost trust in Microsoft and the person running it but that was an eye opener.
