Golf Grip Pressure (Sensors Prove What Happens When You Swing)

Not too long ago I did a tip about golf grip pressure throughout your swing. To do this, I used a grip that beeps if you grip on too hard. After I posted the tip, a gentleman contacted me from Sensor Edge. They make the best sensors in the world. They are used by Swing Catalyst, Full Swing etc.

He laughed at my beeping grip because they have created the world's first sensor for the grip that measures the pressure in your left or top hand. Your right or trail hand too. This has never been done before.

He just happened to be coming to town so we got together. I was able to hit shots and measure my grip pressure as well as have him answer questions that few people know about what actually happens with your grip pressure as you swing.

This is a long tip but in my mind it's very important because if you want to play better golf it all starts with your grip.

They have recently figured out a way to put their sensors in a golf grip. These sensors can These sensors are used by high end fitters, tour pros and long drivers.

Thanks Paul. I think that you are exactly right in terms of an operative way to perceive and perform the grip during the swing based on the data. They appear to have used the sensor grip featured in your video above

You are an amazing teacher, Paul. Congrats!

the lightest of grip pressure at impact, the way in which the wrist work is finished halfway through downswing, and the quantification of pressure between lead and trail hands . . huge step in beneficial information

I have noticed that in an effort to get an effortless swing, I am easing off the grip pressure so much that the club is feeling loose in my lead wrist. This was causing my lead wrist to cup heavily in the takeaway. I'll try to make the grip pressure a bit stronger but at the same time keep my wrists loose. It's a bit difficult to be honest but I guess I have to keep working at it.

You have the best videos. I hope next year I will be able to use them more than now. Unfortunately I've had my right shoulder replaced in April. Been using you lessons for 2 weeks. Unfortunately im getting my left shoulder replacement next month. Thank you for the help.

For what it’s worth I’d rather have Doc Wilson teach me in person, he’s proven over and over we don’t need a machine to show us how to swing❤

A long time follower of Paul Wilson's excellent instruction, I came here after reading a technical article in this month's (July-Aug 2024) Golf Magazine, entitled The Big Squeeze. The article cites data from Grip Sensor technology. The results are similar to what Paul calls out in his previous video on variable grip pressure during the swing; that "pros" tend to ease their grip just at the start of the downswing and then add more pressure at impact. Specifically, the Golf Mag graphs show, the pro's grip pressure, varies from 50% of max pressure at takeaway, increasing to around 75% at the top, easing back down to 50% in the early downswing and then increasing to 75-80% at impact. Predictably, the problem with Golf mag's exact rendition of these data is that thinking about the subtle variance rhythm during the golf swing is not really beneficial, imo. The data needs to be translated into a perceptibly managed feel during the swing. At least that is what I found after trying to apply Golf Mag's line graph during a round yesterday. I think what Paul conveys in his previous video, easy at the bottom, firmer toward the top and then let it do what it will do before and after impact is probably the closest we are going to get to applying this to our swings.

Do you physically tighten at the top or does it happen naturally cuz gravity and the force of the club

Paul...I think that's the first time I've seen you swing without giving a tip...nice and fluid too

Paul,
I am a very keen average golfer on a 15 handicap, aged 65. I have got down to a 9 in the past.

I watch a lot of YouTube Golf and have been watching your channel on and off for years.

Recently however I decided to take up Jim Venetos’ unusual method as I was surprised how well it went standing closed and keeping the body quiet until after impact.

However, while pretty consistent, it limits how far I hit the ball, particularly my woods.

Your method seems diametrically opposite to Jim’s method in the use of the body, but I’m interested in trying it out, mainly to get more distance.

It intrigues me how two methods could be so different and yet both appear to have merit!

Can you give me any reasons to commit to your method other than “give it a try and see how it goes”??

Potential student Pete

This is a great video Paul. Just more proof to what you've been saying all along - a good swing uses the body, and the arms and hands just follow along (virtually tension free) for the ride!

I am searching for the video on the beeping glove he laughed at. Can you please post a link? I certainly understand why a club full of sensors is superior to a glove with some cheap electronics, but perhaps it is more affordable that the 4500 dollars, or even the 1200 dollars they have as target for the consumer version of the product. Can you please explain, with the increased knowledge from this video, if the beeping glove is a useful tool for learning a better grip pressure?
