I Switched From iMovie To Final Cut Pro... Here's What I Think // Final Cut Pro BEGINNERS tutorial

Recently, I switched from iMovie to Final Cut Pro for editing my YouTube videos. Since it's been a couple of months, I wanted to loop back and share my thoughts on Final Cut Pro and some FCP basics you NEED to know if you're getting started on this video editing software.

One of my favorite features in Final Cut Pro is you can hit "R" on your keyboard, select a portion of your clip, then hit delete... so easy for cutting out your breaths/pauses instead of using the blade tool!!! That sped up my editing time so much!

I recommend creating a folder for each video you're working on and creating a new library for each video to put in said folder. You can create a template folder to stick on your desktop and drag it on to your external drive when you create new videos, rename it and such. When you've finished a video you can drag that entire folder to wherever you're archiving it and start the process again. I figured this out after I had more than 10 videos in the same library and it confused me and looked messy. It comes down to preference ultimately and what works best for you. Hope this helps any users of FCPX.

By the way, the tip about editing on an external hard drive is spot on. I had several catastrophic crashes trying to use my Mac for FCPX editing (as great as it is). Getting an SSD drive is an absolute must!

I am 20 days into FCP and I’ve been so confused about the filing system and it’s been driving me crazy and none of the tutorials explained it as well as you just did. grateful... prob worth mentioning about re-linking any files if you move them ... Awesome overview! I don’t feel like I need final cut yet but it seems like the 2 biggest selling points are color correction and being able to layer tons of footage.
