Considering Apple has control of their own silicon, now is the perfect time for them to get into gaming. The limited number of chips and similar architecture across their devices could make for a very console like level of optimization. Assuming their games will run across all their devices with the appropriate scaling, and assuming they get a ton of true AAA games, this could be a huge win for Apple.

It seems to me that Apple would first launch a controller system for current iPhones and iPads.

The data and feedback from that product would help to influence a future Apple TV based console system that is device independent from an iPhone.

This is logical and it’s made possible by Apple’s incredible lead in power efficient SOCs and by their huge ecosystem. Apple should have done this 10 years ago. Personally I am rooting for Nintendo, but do not underestimate Apple’s ability to compete with all of the other gaming platforms.

As much as I love Apple, I hope that it's a controller accessory that is usable on all iPhones and iPads. Hopefully, also be supported for a few generations and we don't need to replace it with every new iPhone and iPad. This makes the most sense to me, rather than adding a new device when they could make use of the current devices they have.

Yeah patents don't mean a lot though - it's fairly easy for apple to come up with a design and patent it - it just means they're exploring the possibility. If they're negotiating with big developers that would be an excellent sign and get them investing more into Apple's Metal API

It’s kinda dumb if it’s a console. They Should focus on gaming on mobile and apple tv as a console. Might as well if it’s going to be a portable device or a separate console. I already use the backbone one with various games, including Stadia and Xbox game pass cloud gaming.

It won’t be a standalone switch type system. This wouldn’t sell as people own iPhones that can play top end games. This will be mag type controller add ons.

If Apple stopped being infatuated with services and subscriptions, a dedicated handheld gaming device would be out this year. Design it well, good quality, don't hobble the device by making restrictions even Nintendo wouldn't do, and price it the same as a Nintendo Switch not more, and you'll have a winner.
