I've never thought of it as 'declarations get hoisted, assignments don't' but that's a good observation and will make it super easy to remember the behavior of var and function declarations.

I never comment on someone, but you are a legend, simple, and clear, and the analogies and examples are spot-on, and simple enough for anyone to understand. Engineering should always be explained simply enough for everyone to understand even if they can't code. Sometimes the only blocker between a bad and a good developer is the understanding of the concepts he is using in his own way.
