Not sure how much Shadows really has to do with it. This has likely been in talks well before Shadows came out. They likely only waited to announce it so it didn't impact initial sales.

They made a mistake by trying to be inclusive with assassins creed shadows it strays from the original games story and changes major historical facts in massive ways and from what I've seen the gameplay style has changed so drastically that it no longer gives the same feel of assassins creed
