A summit of 12 South American leaders is taking place in Brazil aimed at reviving cooperation in the region. Brazil's President Luis Inazio Lula da Silva is hosting the gathering following years of fractious relations between the countries attending the event. The meeting includes Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro. He's visiting Brazil for the first time since it restored relations with Caracas that had been severed by former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.

Maduro's presence in Brazil is a sign of growing acceptance of Venezuela by some countries in the international community. His government is considered to be authoritarian and illegitimate by dozens of countries around the world. In 2020, The US' Department of Justice charged the Venezuelan leader and other high-ranking officials with Narco-Terrorism, Corruption and Drug Trafficking. Now, Maduro aspires to oversee his country joining the BRICS group of leading emerging nations. Brazil's Lula said he would welcome the move.

For his part Maduro said membership of BRICS for Venezuela would contribute to a new multipolar order in the world: “We need to build a new geopolitical order with fundamental components. One of them is the Union of South America, with our diversities. And together with the BRICS, we have seen in the geopolitical sphere an element where we can advance in the union of these five very powerful countries."

Well, its funny how EU leaders can criticize this kind of action and still accepting Viktor Orbán as a normal democratic regime.

What is interesting is how it is all focused on Venezuela. I could not see a moment talking about the regional plans for development among these nations and how Brazil-Argentina relations are on another different level.

As an Arab, I am very happy that Latinamerica takes steps to unity. The West (Europe and the US) have been toying with our feet long enough. Time for Africa to unify, time for Latinamerica to unify. Let's learn from the good the West has to offer, and let's leave the bad they came with.
Enhorabuena for my cousins in Latinamerica❤

I'm excited and elated that Guyana is finally coming to terms with the realization that we are a South American nation and make the necessary changes required to reflect that reality. While we are a Caricom partner we were never fully accepted as such. Consequently, we must accept that we are country on the continent of South America with neighbors who welcome us, and we don't have to cross an ocean to see and socialize with.

I think it is good for all the South American countries to sit at the table and discuss opportunities, even problems to create a renewed focus for prosperity, a vision for the regions, the peoples and cooperation with one another.

There is an America we tend to ignore. South America. They should come together and reject US hegemony or even Chinese Debt trap and function as a unit which would propel the importance of the region to international levels

Europe: Stop trying to do put us down! We are increasing our cooperation and you have no say in that. For more than a decade Mercosul has been trying to make a deal with Europe with no success. Now that Brazil, as the natural regional leader is moving on with BRICS, Europe wants to give an opinion. As Cariocas would say: “Não fode.”

Maduro ain’t no saint. In South America we know better than anyone because Venezuelans are now our work colleagues and friends. But these 900 sanctions really need to stop. the population is not going to fight for democracy if they are not living there anymore or if they are so incredibly desperate for food and survival that they do not have time or energy to think about politics. This immigration crisis that only now is reaching America and Canada the region has been living for 6 years. Maduro is getting stronger and the kids are dying of hunger. And Saudi Arabia who does worse is the west best friend.

I love this union of South American countries, we cannot continue to depend on that damn dollar or on that disastrous government of the United States, long live the Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries in the world.

Anything that doesn't involve the West (G7 + America) is a step in the right direction.

it is a turning point in the right direction; it is a long overdue for the south american countries to bring about all their resources together for the betterment of their people without being subject to the neo colonial control

I'd love to see if you also consider the Chinese and Saudi dictators illegitimate, or only Maduro
