'These are all Gwoka records from Guadeloupe, the percussion style of music that originated on the island from the slaves that were brought from Africa. Gwoka traditionnel, which has recently been recognized by Unesco, has seven recognized and codified rhythms on which the percussionists and singer improvise freely.

All were recorded between 1979 and 1991, and are some examples of how some groups and artists at the time, though rooted in traditional Gwoka, were keen to expand and experiment with hybridizing the music, introducing new instruments like a synth, drum machine, guitar, saxophone etc. Their styles vary widely but can broadly be grouped under the 'Gwoka Moderne' bracket.

My dad's been living in Guadeloupe for 25+ years, hence my interest in this music. Most of these tracks are actually on my YT channel.

The next Time Capsule release, Lèspri ka, will focus on this particular genre (the Selekta Ka track will be part of the comp)."

Solidarity with Guadeloupe in their current struggle against French restrictions.

Just so you know, I went on a 4 hour rabbit hole last night after hearing Van Lévé's 'An Ki Fasson'. YT recommended the playlist Lèspri Ka by cookies and berries, which is filled with music from Guadeloupe. My life will never be the same!! Thanks again for this great selection.

People don't really recognize the kind of musical revolution that took in the French Caribbean, starting in the late 60s, with Malavois and culminating with Kassav, Eugene Mona and the legendary Erick Cosaque in the late 70s ad 80s. It is history all West Indians, regardless of language, should be proud of

I had no idea what Gwoka Moderne from Guadeloupe might be music wise, aside from a potential Latin flair. I love this!

Thank you for showcasing so many musical styles and influences. Many blessings to all.

Third (Luc Hubert Sejor) and 8th (Selekta Ka) songs were particularly delightful.

Thank you for this mix. It reminds me of the time I heard music from Guadaloupe and Martinique during my time in Venezuela. I would love to hear a segment dedicated to French Guiana

I love being introduced to new genres of music and not knowing anything about music from Guadeloupe I really enjoyed this selection. Especially liked the tune at around 23:00 and the one after that. Thanks Cedric. 🙏
