2014 Fleer Showcase Precious Metal Gems Wayne Gretzky PMG GREEN /10 #3 PSA 7.5

In 2014, Wayne Gretzky teamed up with Swiss watch maker Brietling for his own limited-edition timepiece that played off his famous jersey number. Only 99 of the Chronomat GMT Wayne Gretzky Edition watches were produced, and they were available at a price of $10,099, with ten percent of sales benefiting Gretzky’s Foundation. The Canada-exclusive watch became reality three years into his tenure as an ambassador for the company but was worth the wait. That same year, collectors had another chance at acquiring a Gretzky card for which they had been waiting. Back in 1996, Metal Universe was produced for the hockey card market, but the iconic Precious Metal Gems parallel was not included with the set, costing several hockey legends their lone opportunity to have a PMG. Starting in 2012, some of those players finally got their PMG, as the Metal Universe brand was revitalized as an insert in a handful of Fleer brands released by Upper Deck. One player who got in on the action was Gretzky, and his 2014 Fleer Showcase Metal Universe Green PMG is available in this month’s Premier Auction. Only ten of each player’s PMGs from the set were given the green foil treatment—leaving this card far scarcer than one of Gretzky’s watches.
