Nirvana performing an early version of Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time on 4/17/91. Remixed Video/50fps option. For reference the Nevermind album was released on September 24, 1991. This performance took place at the O.K. Hotel in Seattle, WA. I'm always looking for uncirculated Nirvana Video/Audio. If you taped Nirvana back in the day or happen to have any uncirculated Nirvana media please shoot me a message or email. Thx! Email: Jaycopperpot at gmail dot com)

Note: I have ZERO to do w/ the advertisements on this or any other video on this channel. The channel is NOT monetized by me. Any advertisements you may see are placed by and provide revenue for (c) claimants (artist/management/etc). If they're bothersome you could consider Youtube premium (~$12 a month for no Ads + Youtube Music) or find a free Adblocker for your browser/device. If it were up to me there would definitely not be Ads on any video on this channel. The alternative, though, is that (c) owners blocks these videos....so is what it is....

It's so cool to hear him announce they're playing "smells like teen spirit" and no one in the audience reacts.

It's cool to see them perform this song non-sarcastically

The fact that he had to introduce it and that this is the first time people heard it and even the lyrics were different is truly mind blowing

Kurt never expected the Nevermind album to out sell Michael Jackson's Black or White album. These guys made rock and roll history.

You can see how passionate Kurt still was singing this song. Sad to see how bored and disinterested he got in only a couple years.

This a month before they went in the studio to record Nevermind. Butch Vig really helped shaped this song into what it became. All the raw material was there, clearly, but the studio production took something great and made it timeless.

To me, this will always be the single greatest performance of Smells Like Teen Spirit. You can almost feel the energy in the room even today! And they didn't hate playing it yet at this point.

God damn Kurt was young. When you think about it, he was 22 when bleach was released, 24 for Nevermind, and 26 for in utero. Then died at 27. It’s crazy to think he was only on this planet for 27 years. Damn

Clearly the lyrics, other than "Here we are now, entertain us, " were not written yet.

I feel like this version shows more of how Kurt Cobain's mind is in a creative sense than the original. The original is more softened down to fit the radio and what people like. This right here is a hard dose of reality.

In 1991, I had graduated high school. I lived in a small texas town on the coast. I did not listen to country music, I absolutely hated hair metal. I could listen to Guns N Roses, but that was about it. I didn't fit in. I was listening to the Cure, New Order, the Smiths, and the Beatles. That was about it. Then about a few months after I graduated, I was sitting in my mom's living room with my cousins and we were watching MTV. This video came on. I had been hearing it on the radio now and then, but really didn't pay no mind until this particular day. We all stopped what we were doing, sat down, turned the volume up and just watched with our eyes wide open. There are certain songs you hear that make you stop and think, "what the fuck is this? I've never heard anything like this..." This was one of those songs. I knew this was going to change "things". And it did. For everyone. Music, fashion, my generation. So glad I could be a part of it, in some small way.

It's so raw and intense. Whether you like it or not Rock 'n roll changed the pop culture only two times, first with The Beatles and second with Nirvana.
