DJI Phantom 2V+ Crash caused by Mounting of GPS Tracker

Did you ever had the idea to mount a GPS Tracker to your Copter - for 'safety reasons'? Good Idea......additional weight for your copter only some grams - negligible- your Phantom 2 Vision plus can carry about 1.2 kg....shouldn't be a Problem......

But..... be careful where you intend to mount it...

In this case shown in the video, the 'Special and simple' kind of mounting led to a totally unexpected crash..., fortunately into a wheat field, which slowed the crash.

Why did this happen? Wind Influence / one or two blasts in about 40 m height (on the ground almost no wind) forced the the tracker to swing, balancing attempts of the Copter electronics however, failed and made the situation even worse. Ultimately the different thrusts of the propeller (trying to compensate the commuting, with skew up to 45 *) - at the expense of climbing capabilities - and the copter was falling rapidly down with nice swinging... All full throttle did not help .... in the dense wheat field, there was no damage fortunately neither to the Gimbal nor to the Copter, and .....

....thanks to Tracker data via GPS / SMS (though this 'thing' caused the crash / sorry, my fault...) the lost and hidden copter was rediscovered exactly and immediately at the shown GPS map Point deep in the vast field...

So...don't underestimate the pendulum capacities of a light-weighted-59grams-GPS-Tracker, if there is any wind in the height....even with the Phantom 2 Vision+ capability to carry about 1.2 kg (!)....The solution i found....but watch the video......

Thanks a lot to Julian the "Hitman9108" for helping......

@Rafael Torralrs:

VERY easy. I just sent an SMS to the Tracker in the Field, at it Sent GPS-Position back to my Smartphone. Opened the Link in Google Maps. There you will see YOUR actual position AND the marked position of the Copter. As YOU move, YOUR position Marker will move, and you just have to go straight to the marked Position of your Copter, to find it VERY easy and very quick....

You should stabilize it better. It's not so much the weight but the wind that moves the gps side to side. As momentum is created by it's swinging motion, the phantom can't catch up with that opposing momentum as it's trying to stabilize it, hence why you had that issue. If you somehow attach it on the body so it will not move about, you'll have a much better flight experience.

Whoever tied the tracker hanging from the bottom should of told the pilot that it wasn't mounted safely.  Thank god for the looping soundtrack of that great song.

That wheat field is making me have an allergy attack through the Internet.

That is called Vortex Ring State, you descended too quickly. Only horizontal movement could've prevented that.

Which GPS tracker brand  did you use?  Thanks.

hello nice video but my question is about flytrex live 3G : If you loose power of batterie before the end of the crash you just have the last point in charge ? Right ?
And can you call your flytrex live 3g with your phone ? is the live got is own batterie ?

Am I missing the model of the tracker you're using?

no....it wasnt the tracker that caused your crash, that was VRS (vortex ring state) all day, you were coming straight down, that caused the air under y our phantom to be chopped up, then you descended thru that chopped air, your blades couldnt get a bite, and it dropped like a rock, seen it a million times, i can carry a full 2 liter soda bottle under my phantom and it wont crash....that gps tracker didnt weigh enough to cause a crash.  dont land straight down unless you have a decent wind blowing, use lateral movement to prevent that.
search yt for VRS, you will see a common copter is coming straight down, then it starts going

I've had a few crashes in the months I've had my phantom, gimbal and gopro, including flat out into a tree, but its all very strong stuff

Have you ever considered the tagg pet tracker? Check out my video of adding tracking. A lot smaller and less weight. Mounts perfect On the vision plus and vision

Don't blame the tracker for a bad mounting of it.
