I honestly thought it was a Airhead that wasn't flavored yet, so it was just the Airhead Taffy without the flavor, although it did have a vague flavor sometimes.

I heard once that mystery flavors can also be from when they switch production lines on Mass produced stuff. They drop out the color but the raw material will still have some residual flavor from the first batch. So if they're making cherry then switch to orange there's some overlap before it only tastes like orange. So they cut the color and make mystery.
