Understanding China - Face to Face with Economist Keyu Jin

The relationship between the world's two largest economies, the US and China, has rarely been more tense. China's new Ambassador in Washington Xie Feng has admitted this is a time of "serious difficulties and challenges", but insists he wants to put relations between the two nations back on track.
And one person who may have some insight into how to do that is Economist and Author Keyu Jin - whose latest book is "The New China Playbook – Beyond Socialism and Capitalism".

The Associate Professor at the London School of Economics was born in China, educated in the United States and now works between London and Beijing, and explains to Juliet Mann how her background has given her a unique perspective on China’s role in the world, and why the West still needs to improve its understanding of her home country.

A very brillliant, beautiful lady, a teacher with rare "objectivity, " scientific objectivity, on the issue of the "Chinese characteristics" of the Chinese economy. Indeed she has qualities of leadership--strength of soul and extraordinary knowledge of pragmatic governance. CNN should invite her for an interview, so that Americans can better understand the real China, as opposed to the narrow view fed us by our elites, who fear China because they have no knowledge of China.

She is one of the most articulate and intelligent Chinese women around and let's hope she will appear in more platforms to give an alternative narrative about China than the usual western one which is often biased and incorrect.

No one explain the Chinese economy and Chinese political system and the Chinese changes better than professor Kenyu Jin.
We should hear more of her talk! What a refreshing voice!

I see China change and adapt to a changing environment and society. While the West was still stuck in the 19th century imperialism mindset.

We should all be helping China to grow, because we see that China's attitude is for the good of all people. That is far more advanced than the West's ideas of war.

I am an ethnic Chinese from Malaysia. Of course my first loyalty is towards my country by birth. But when it comes to seeing other trying to bully China or China prospering or advancing, my hearth is with China. Cant explain why.

Do you really believe that the West, especially the US and UK, doesn’t understand China? Having the finest universities in the world and well-oiled think-tanks, the American ruling class understands everything there is to know about China. Their treatments of other countries are based on the principle that they own the world and it’s crime for anyone to sit on the natural resources (hence, we lost China, we lost Vietnam, etc. You can’t lose anything you don’t own 😭). Their win-win strategy is ‘I win, I win’ and their win-lose strategy is ‘I win, you lose’. Add the arrogance oil on this bully mentality fire, you get wars 😱 Evidence abounds, and you can’t possibly miss it.

The biggest surprise of all would be that China did not surpass America economically. China's population is 4.7 times that of America. Educationally, both quantitatively and numerically, there is no way under the sun that China cannot surpass America. In the 19 70s and '80s, Japan with labor force size half that of America did so well economically that America pulled out all stops to essentially destroy the Japanese economy. Now we look at China with China's obsession of higher education, and China's social mandate to raise the standard of living for all Chinese people, there is no way that China will remain smaller economically and militarily than America. America, like Great Britain, has seen its time in the Sun. Lack of competition worldwide was America's Good Fortune. China will not compete blindfolded and with one hand tied behind its back in order to allow America to continue winning.

Good to hear from the China perspective.

China is far from perfect. China is full of problems.
But look at how many of those problems China managed to resolve in the last 70 years.

China still have plenty of room to grow.

What China has achieved is amazing.

Indeed, China must keep the politics above the capital! Thank you, Keyu Jin. Living in the tiny country, Denmark, it is very interesting to watch China and other 'players' on the world scene, and sort through the truths and lies one are bombarded with.

I worked for the Nepal Government sericulture initiative about 9 years. While searching for silkworm, I found this book (Chinese scientist deported by the US) - "Thread of the Silkworm". God bless that China would remain intact further 4000 years!

the only way to understand another country is to try and see the world through the eyes of the other.

Jin made a very good point about Chinese companies being impatient and aiming at quick successes, that is absolutely true. That is why the burdens of long term profitable projects and non profitable projects fall in SOEs, like infrastructure, electricity, etc. The government is playing an important role in keeping it in balance, is it flawless, no, but far better than leaving it to the so called invisible hands.
