Think about building a house or even just renovating a room. 💭 You have a vision, a budget, and a timeline.

But how do you make that dream a reality without breaking the bank?

Well, that's where an estimator and a quantity surveyor come in. 👷‍♂

While they may seem like two sides of the same coin at first glance, there are some key differences.

An estimator like Quoc Duong from Duo Tax Cost Consultancy is focused on calculating the cost of the actual work, so builders often hire them to create estimates.

In contrast, a quantity surveyor is an independent estimator hired by various stakeholders - from insurance companies to the ATO - to work out the costs of a project.

So, while both play important roles in construction, it's the independence of the quantity surveyor that really sets them apart from the pack.

*WRONG*
A Quantity surveyor deals with the contractual matters (tender, building contracts, payment terms, managing disputes etc ) as well as managing cost throughout the project cycle (monthly payment applications, agreeing variations, monthly cost reports, cash flow analysis etc)

Estimator - specialises in estimating & quantifying construction costs & resources. For example producing BOQ’s (Bills of Quantity), plant and materials required, labour resources etc. They are mainly involved at the initial (pre contract and or pre construction period) stages

Not mentioned in the video, an Estimator specialised estimates, Costings as well as contract details that affect costs, scheduling and the such, in the pre-construction phase of the project. The Quantity Surveyor does more of cost tracking, change orders and the such during the construction process.

He is 100% wrong. A cost estimator is usually focused on the pre-construction phase, i.e, estimating costs of labour, materials, equipment, and time. In contrast, a Quantity Surveyor focuses on the entire life cycle of a construction project, from feasibility to final accounts, i.e, does everything, including estimating, etc.
