This is kinda surreal for me. My whole life, I've always prided myself on being the one who can do research the best. Whenever my friends and family would need to find something, know something, or buy something specific, they would ask me, because they knew I could research the best. But I suppose technology has rendered me redundant. I don't feel bad exactly as I knew this was gonna happen eventually. But it's just a little surreal right now.

The fact that it asked clarifying questions is a bigger deal than the deep research feature itself, in my opinion. I would love if other models were smart enough to ask clarifying questions!

Having done deep academic research myself in and outside of my PhD work, the challenge I see is about the completeness of analysis, when it’s good enough and is it good enough. Almost always complex analysis’ taken more than 1 pass, I’d say multiple approaches over the course of a period. Thus doing such analysis in one shot makes it shallow deep research.
Anyways I’m applauding to the work OpenAI team does. These are great steps towards betterment. Management of complexity and distillation of the essence from the ample amount of generated info will be the ultimate challenge. Hard to digest business value is not a true business value. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication

The UI now definitely needs a pdf-style page thumbnail preview. As a user, I want to see at a glance how long the reports are and be able to click into specific pages so that I can quickly jump to section headings to determine if the returned content length is appropriate and if the outline matches my needs.

That market analysis, if my boss had asked me to put that together, would have taken 3 days, MINIMUM. Maybe 2 weeks if I had the time. Thats gonna help a lot of people do their job fast, meaning the size of the team is going to get smaller.
