The Doors - When the Music's Over

Lyrics:
Yeah, c'mon

When the music's over
When the music's over, yeah
When the music's over
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights, yeah

When the music's over
When the music's over
When the music's over
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights

For the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
Music is your only friend
Until the end
Until the end
Until the end

Cancel my subscription to the Resurrection
Send my credentials to the House of Detention
I got some friends inside

The face in the mirror won't stop
The girl in the window won't drop
A feast of friends
"Alive!" she cried
Waitin' for me
Outside!

Before I sink
Into the big sleep
I want to hear
I want to hear
The scream of the butterfly

Come back, baby
Back into my arm
We're gettin' tired of hangin' around
Waitin' around with our heads to the ground

I hear a very gentle sound
Very near yet very far
Very soft, yeah, very clear
Come today, come today

What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down

I hear a very gentle sound
With your ear down to the ground
We want the world and we want it...
We want the world and we want it...
Now
Now?
Now!

Persian night, babe
See the light, babe
Save us!
Jesus!
Save us!

So when the music's over
When the music's over, yeah
When the music's over
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights
Turn out the lights

Well the music is your special friend
Dance on fire as it intends
Music is your only friend
Until the end
Until the end
Until the end!

Jim's father said he couldn't sing and would never make it as a musician!! I guess he ate his words!! How can anyone put thumbs down on this OMG one of the best bands ever!!! They made their mark in just 4 short years, could you imagine what he would have done if Jim had lived longer!! God bless you Jim!!!

This song has provided decades of consolation to my sadness & loneliness. Thank you, Jim, for being my musical friend in low times.

The first time when I listen to this masterpiece when Jim says "cancel my subscription to the resurrection, send my credentials to the house of detention" it creep me out was like a message from far beyond the grave...

This might be the greatest musical piece ever in Rock history. An amazing combination of powerful emotion with an incredibly unconventional musical approach with such intriguing lyrics. The emotional feel and intensity of this is off the charts, truly remarkable and one of a kind. There is nothing to compare this piece to. This is amazing.

The Doors are different than any other band in the entire world! You have every other great rock band...and then you have The Doors! So Special!!

Man, I love that intro. That stuttering keyboard and the syncopation with the drums, then the guitar comes in like a chainsaw.

"cancel my subscription to the resurrection ..." my god what powerful uncontrollable sensitive lyrics.
pure with depth of experience and nostalgia for innocence.

I just went from 71 to 19 again. Those were some unbelievably wild times! Glad I made it.

The Doors were artists which had a great passion for art and life.. Light years ahead of their time..

I first heard this album as a young GI in SE Asia in 1968. I'd never done drugs but was familiar with, and loved, The Doors' music. "Light My Fire" on a car radio entranced me and fellow GIs in 1967. In 1968 I recorded this album to audio tape and played it back on a reel-to-reel recorder (how's that for ancient technology?) on headphones in my rack.

I'm not kidding; this changed my life. It still resonates. I'm both more dismayed by the world as it is and more hopeful, even more positive about our future.

But we must always remember what happens when the music's over.

Happy Birthday Jim, Wish you where here. Today december 08 2018. Jim would have been 75 years. Here in Norway the radiochannels have been playing The Doors all night long. That makes me proud.

It was 50 years ago tonight that I saw the Doors. Live. Cobo Hall. Detroit.
Three opening acts. Tickets were $6.50 each. It was my first date.
Persian light...

A friend and myself dropped acid and we were compelled against our will to take a journey. I was strictly a punk rock kid, if it wasn't Sex Pistols, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, etc, everything else was shit to me. I hated The Doors, hated them, wouldn't give them the time or day. This journey of ours landed us at another friends house and little did I know that's where the real journey began. This friend locked us in a room and started playing all this Doors music, videos, etc. It was then Jim Morrison and the Doors music spoke to me, converted me, and I was never the same again. I still loved punk rock, it was still my music of choice but my musical taste opened up and I started liking many other bands and different styles of music. The Doors changed everything for me.

"When the music's over, turn out the lights. When the music is your special friend, dance on fire as it intends. Music is your only friend, until the end." I think this is their greatest song. Maybe even more than The End which is also great. This song seems to sum up the message of the Doors or any band for that matter. And as a musician, it really hits me where I live. As my late music history professor said, "listen and marvel."
