Is Your Foundation Water, Silicone or Oil Based - and Why It Matters!

We choose foundations and primers based on recommendations from bloggers and friends without really thinking about what's actually in it. It is actually very useful to know what ingredients are in your foundation in order for it to work for your specific needs.

There are three types of ingredients at the base of liquid foundations - water, silicone and oil. Each one has a specific skin type that it is best suited for and can also guide skincare product choices and other makeup products like primers.

In this video, I talk about these 3 foundation bases and some examples of common brands you may be using.

This is valuable information Margaret! I have been frustrated about the performance of some of my foundations and now I can see that they were probably influenced by the type of primer I used. I wish makeup companies would simply label foundations and primers with their base as oil, silicone or water to make it easy for us. Then we would be more satisfied with their products which would improve their sales. Win, win for everyone!

You've got it *almost* right. It's so confusing, but science saves the day. 😅You can typically use silicone based foundation on top of water based primers but not the other way around. Your skin care is often an emulsion of oil in water and will somewhat soak into the skin rather than sit on top. So your water based gripping primers act the same.

The pilling actually happens when you put a water based foundation OVER a silicone based primer. Because the silicone forms a barrier and it causes the water based products to sit on top.

Just a short compliment about your hairstyle recently, especially in Old Wives' Tales Short. I find your style of wearing your hair more off your face looks amazing and really flatters you. Love it!

This is so interesting. I've never thought about this before. But it explains why some blush doesn't sit well on different foundations. Thanks, again for your great content.

Great video Margaret. I just realized this myself. The list of foundations will be so helpful. Now for the Primers~~we will have to determine those before we buy!!

Very helpful! I’ve been trying diff foundations out with certain primers, & I’m constantly searching online for what base they are. I’ve ran into a lot of Sephora & Ulta employees at diff locations that DON’T Know this! & say you can wear any type foundation w/any primer. & some don’t know to look for silicone even tho water is 1st ingredient.

Thank you so much, Margaret, for sharing this information! Why haven’t I thought of this before?? There have been so many times that a primer peeled when I put certain foundations over it. Now it makes perfect sense! Again, thank you!☺️💕

Margaret that was simply amazing because water and silicone you're right don't mix I have a small YouTube channel and I'm 73 and I never knew that myself and I was trained makeup artist totally forgot that I don't think we used a whole lot of bases back in my days we always just use moisturizer but that was so informative thank you so so much because when you're 73 my age you have to be careful what will sink into your wrinkles and as you said water doesn't mix with oil which is silicone great great video thank you so much for informing us God bless ❤️🥰

Wow, why didn't we know this? I don't tend to buy primer and foundation from the same product line, but clearly need to research both. Thanks for this information as makeup is becoming more necessary in my 70"s between hair and skin color changes.
