Steeped in ancient Jewish lore and demonology, THE VIGIL is a supernatural horror film set over the course of a single evening in Brooklyn’s Hasidic Borough Park neighborhood. Low on funds and having recently left his insular religious community, Yakov reluctantly accepts an offer from his former rabbi and confidante to take on the responsibility of an overnight “shomer,” fulfilling the Jewish practice of watching over the body of a deceased community member. Shortly after arriving at the recently departed’s dilapidated house to sit the vidil, Yakov begins to realize that something is very, very wrong.

A strong and underrated horror film with a creepy vibe and lots of very effective scares! Can't believe I'd never heard of this before, I found it on Hulu and was pleasantly surprised. The monster as metaphor for religious trauma gives it a bit more depth than the average PG-13 haunted house movie.

Very good movie. It's somber and quiet, but I loved learning about the ritual and it's. Meaning. It had scary parts and his guilt over the little boy really got to me. I believe that this is true. Some negative entities you pick them up anywhere and they attach themselves to you.

I had just watched The Vigil. I went through some real spine-chilling moments. And that film reminded me of a research about shedim and other demonic creatures...

Premise seems interesting. I will be one to admit that adapting anything related to Jewish mysticism is a lot harder than it looks because of the guarded nature related to the rabbinical teachings.

Using the Mourner's Kaddish as underlying tone in the trailer is a nice touch.

I might watch as a home rental, but in these pandemic times, going to an actual movie theater may not be for the best.
