Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th president of the United States in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. He was 42 years old at the time, making him the youngest person to become president of the United States. As a leader of the progressive movement, he championed his “Square Deal” domestic policies, which called for fairness for all citizens, breaking of bad trusts, regulation of railroads, and pure food and drugs.

Roosevelt expanded the powers of the presidency and of the federal government in support of the public interest in conflicts between big business and labor. He also steered the nation toward an active role in world politics, particularly in Europe and Asia. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for mediating an end to the Russo-Japanese War (1904–05), and he secured the route and began construction of the Panama Canal (1904–14).

Theodore Roosevelt had many accomplishments during his presidency. He is famous for his domestic program Square Deal which had three basic ideas known as the “three C’s”: conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection. He expanded the powers of the presidency and of the federal government in support of the public interest in conflicts between big business and labor.
